Mary, Roland and Adriana Lucy came from here.

THEN

King Solomon's Temple
Lost centuries ago:

Beneath it the great and mysterious treasure of a great king.

Over the centuries other great treasure were hidden here, until one day, those that knew of the long lost temple location,
and the treasure room itself... were lost.

NOW

The Knights Templar. Assembled to protect holy pilgrims, so they organized under the guise of; instead they search under the found temple grounds.

Dig, serarching for treasure. Under the stable even, they find something....

"This is it then."
"Do not touch it, it is evil incarnate."
"Wrap it, and send it away. Far away."
"So it shall be done."
"But it must be kept in secret."
"Send the young knight and that new monk."
"Yes, but to where."
"Where it will never be found."

= = = =

Roland found himself in the garb of a knight, standing next to a monk.
Roland was dressed and ready for combat, the monk in simple robes.
He stood next to a monk, in the heaton the top of a small rise. All about them was rock and dry hard earth.
Two horses and a mule nearby looked about done for.

Roland remembered this life, he had been entrusted with some great treasure. And instead was about to sell it to the enemies of the Temple. But something was missing, this.... this moment, this that was about to happen. It had been blocked. he did not remember how his life as a Knight Templar ended. How can that be?

Mary found herself in the robes of a monk. Some itched terribly. a hand under a robe found the pesky lice, or was it fleas. And something else under the robes. Mary was a man. A holy monk attached to the Knights Templar, an ancestor of Mary Galenus.

Adriana stood next to them, unnoticed. She had not made herself visible, she watched.
As she looked around she noticed little activity. It was early morning, already oppressively hot, not that she noticed it.

A dust cloud appeard, a dozen Arabian soldiers rode toward them. This was the last thing Roland remembered, he'd just sssumed he'd died here. The Arabian soldiers raised swords and hurried their horses toward them.

Roland motioned his friend to remain silent. Though he horsemen came with weapons drawn he made no attempt to draw his own.

"We come in peace," Roland said as the men encircled them. "We wish no trouble."

"What is your business in this land?" said the commander. He was a tall, confident officer with scars that spoke of many battles. He gave Roland a hard, unforgiving stare and held his blade at ready.

"We seek only passage to pray at the sacred relics of the holy land. Your conflicts are with Richard and his Crusader army, not us. We have coin to pay if that will convince you to lower your blades."

Roland waited for the horsemen to consider his offer and said a silent prayer that they would show reason and restraint.

"We will take what we want THEN decide what to do with you both," said the leader.

"You," he said pointing to the monk. "Can you not speak? Do you need your toady to speak for you? Tell us where you come from and where you are going."

"I'm sorry," said Roland. "My friend has taken a vow of silence. It is a holy oath. I'm afraid he cannot break it."

"If he cannot speak then he has no need of his tongue," he said with a hideous smile. "Let me remove it for him. Men, seize them both!"

With this Roland sprung into action with a flash. Two perfectly-balanced throwing daggers flew out from his hands where they had not been a moment earlier. The two horsemen to either side of the leader slumped over in their saddles with blades embedded in their throats.

From there the situation rapidly declined. Roland drew his sword and prepared for combat.

And she could see. As clear as day. The world was like a painting with fierce color usage. She was almost entralled by what she could view.

I can see, she thought.

But the happiness was short lived.. Her delight turned into horror when they were confronted with the men on horses. They particularly wanted to harm them, even threatening to cut this vessel's tongue out. She looked around and saw no weapon. She was defenseless. Then she felt something else hidden in her robes. She touched it and shuddered with the sheer power it eminated. And it was not power that came from good. She somehow remembered what she was supposed to be doing there, like it was a life she had previously experienced. She was confused by this revelation.

Why was she still on this earth during present day? Did she incur the wrath of God and wasn't admitted into heaven when this life was over? She didn't believe in reincarnation. Unless she had much to atone for. Even this far back in history. Had she been tainted by power even then?

She shook her thoughts away as Roland struck, killing two of the men. Things were not going right, but there was one thing that was certain though.

They could not get the artifact. It needed to be disposed of.

But it felt good to in possession of such an item.

One by one Roland deftly took down the horsemen until only he was left standing.

Drawing his blade out of the last of the riders he took two of their horses by the reigns. They were light, fast warhorses used by scouting parties such as the one he'd just dispatched. They would prove useful in this part of the desert.

"Are you uninjured?" said Roland. "Please, take one of the horses. We must make haste away from here. When these men don't report back their friends will come to investigate, with great numbers no doubt."

Suddenly a voice came into his head, like a whisper in the wind.

"Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw on your bones. Look out! Samus is here."

Roland paused, "Did you hear something? A voice in the wind?"

Still keeping herself hidden, Adriana Lucy stumbled backwards and screamed as the fight broke out in front of her. She tried to do that ghost-thing she did, when she would just disappear from one place and appear in another - but it didn't work. She didn't know why it didn't work; but then, she had never known why it did work before. She had just accepted it as just something a ghost could do. But now she couldn't do it. Was she no longer a ghost? She was terrified and bewildered - where was she? How had she gotten here? Roland was there, but where were the rest of the crew? Where was the ship?

"What the rutt is happening?" she cried out in anguish.

Roland paused, "Did you hear something? A voice in the wind?"

Not knowing what he had heard inside his own mind, Adriana Lucy could only assume he meant her. She concentrated to make herself visible, and that at least worked. As if from nowhere, she appeared, sitting in the dirt.

"Sorry," she said, with a tone of humour she didn't really feel. "That was me."

She stood up and began brushing herself off. Not that a ghost could actually get dusty - it was just a force of habit. At the same time she was coming to the realisation that she was really not supposed to be here. She had slipped into the secret room on Nancy Nox and something weird had happened.

She gave Roland a sheepish grin and added, "I think I took a wrong turn somewhere between the cargo bay and..." she paused to look around at their surroundings, "You know, reality."

"A ghost in my past memory?" said Roland narrowing his eyes. In this state he was unsure of what was a memory and what was present reality intruding upon such. "It's more likely than one would think I suppose."

Roland's eyes narrowed as he saw the figure of Adrianna Lucy join them. "How…how did you just slip into my memory like that? How long have you been here?"

"I don't entirely trust that girl," Roland whispered.

"Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw on your bones. Look out! Samus is here."

"And this *is* reality. A version of it in the past, that is. We're reliving a memory of a past…one of my pasts. When this happens its usually like a non-interactive playback but this is different. This is tangible. For all intensive purposes we're in the land of Palestine in, I'd estimate it to be around the 11th century. This is my true self, my original incarnation. Judging by my appearance I am a young French knight. Urban II is the current Pope and Jerusalem is under the control of the Muslims, though not for long."

"As I remember myself and others like me were not the knights from your fairytale stories. At this time most of us were illiterate mercenaries who made their way plundering villages or cities they captured, often defiling and destroying churches or other property. The Crusades to liberate the holy land gave us the perfect outlet for our aggressions."

"Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw on your bones. Look out! Samus is here."

"I'm not sure whether at this point in my memory I was suffering from some sort of dementia due to time in the desert, but that voice is still out there. I wish I could pinpoint its source."

"The temple where we need o deliver the artifact is on top of that hill," said Roland pointing to the center of three hills in the distance. "With our mounts this will be no more than a days' travel. Come, let us make haste."

Roland helped the monk onto a steed and tied it to his. Before embarking he consecrated and buried the bodies. Despite the fact that they were Muslim he still felt compelled to offer them some sort of burial even if it was not in their tradition.

With this, he struck out in the direction of the setting sun.

Mary heard the voice as well.

"Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw on your bones. Look out! Samus is here."

Samus? Why did that sound so familiar? She looked at the man sent to protect her... uh him. The cloud of confusion cleared and she knew it to be Roland. Then she saw Adriana. What was happening?

She remembered this life as if it had only happened yesterday. It was the only time she'd ever been male and sighted. She now understood that she was the Keeper of the Codex. Always had been and always will be. She just followed the book wherever it went.

But where was the book now? She couldn't remember off hand ever being without the book. Where could it be?

She started to speak but found she couldn't. She remembered that in this form, her psyche had taken a vow of silence. One that this body, Gabriel, took very seriously. She waved at Roland and Adriana while pointing to herself and the ground. With her staff, she spelled "MARY."

"How…how did you just slip into my memory like that?  How long have you been here?"

Adriana Lucy raised her eyebrows and bit her lip in an admission of wrong-doing, but hopefully the kind of wrong she could get away with by being cute. "I don't really know. I was on the ship one minute and then I was here. It's tricky being a ghost sometimes..."

Roland whispered something to the monk and Adriana Lucy got the distinct feeling she was not being let off the hook. She didn't think there was anything else she could say, so she didn't.

When Roland explained that he was a French knight, Adriana couldn't help a little smile of admiration. She knew knights to be chivalrous and romantic - so when the next moment Roland set her straight on that score her disappointment was clearly visible on her face. Not that it made him any less attractive; much to Adriana's shame, she always had a thing for bad boys. She was really trying to grow out of that though, now that she was dead and all.

The monk caught her attention, writing in the dirt. When she read the name Mary, she thought it was a question. "No, I'm Adri -" she answered before she understood. "Oh." Then, taking in the full change in Mary, added another. "Ohh."

Thinking Mary, even as a man, might be more sympathetic, Adriana went on, "I'm really sorry for intruding. I don't know what came over me. I was just... sort of... I don't usually sneak around but when I saw that door on the ship appear and you guys go inside I... I guess I was just drawn to it. I'm really sorry."

"If you're in my memory then you're here for a reason. What it is I do not know."

"Mary," said Roland with a smirk. "I must say you make a rather….handsome….man. You definitely have the air of holiness about you. I assume that your form does not allow you to speak. You'll have to enlighten me as to how the experience feels once we're out of this."

***

Atop the hill was a cave hewn into the rock. It looked like the cave had been occupied at some point in the past. Torches lined the walls which Roland lit as he entered. Bidding the others to follow he looked at the intricate runes and carvings on the walls.

The voice grew stronger and more shrill now.

"Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw on your bones. Look out! Samus is here."

It was as if something was watching them. A feeling of unease filled the cavern.

The runes were of an alien origin, yet somehow Roland began to ascertain their meaning, as if they wanted him to understand.

"These speak of the End Times. The Rift will open and Chaos will come. The four lords, disease, vice, blood and deceit. It speaks of a future where all living things are consumed by the Warp, a realm beyond ours, the Immaterium. A realm fed by the darkest thoughts and emotions of all living things. These runes speak of Chaos consuming the universe."

"Mary... I must say you make a rather….handsome….man. You definitely have the air of holiness about you. I assume that your form does not allow you to speak. You'll have to enlighten me as to how the experience feels once we're out of this."

Mary glared at Roland in annoyance. She didn't find this funny in the least bit.

Then they entered the cave, saw the markings and heard the warning again.

"Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw on your bones. Look out! Samus is here."

As the environment became more and more hostile, Mary tried to emit some calmness into the room, but couldn't. In this form, she had no powers. This monk was not a true Keeper. He may had a predisposition to empathy, but he didn't possess the skills Mary was used to having.

But another thing was clear. Her form could feel the thing that dwelled there. And something inside her stirred.

A certain amount of pleasurable intoxication.

Roland felt a rush of anticipation.

"I suddenly realize why we're here," he said. "The future we exist in is one possible thread of infinite possibilities. Something in our future is not right. This world was not supposed to die. Somewhere along the lines something in our timeline went wrong. We're here to help set things right."

"Mary, you're carrying an artifact. A spear tip, the Spear of Destiny. Give it to me, now. I know what I must do."

Roland's voice quickened as he became singularly focused on his task.

"Mary, you're carrying an artifact. A spear tip, the Spear of Destiny. Give it to me, now. I know what I must do."

Mary looked at him as she wrapped her hand around the artifact. She hadn't noticed it there before, but now... now it was quite a distraction. She found herself paying more attention to the spear tip. In her hand, it felt... special. It had depth, if that were a correct way to describe it. It contained power, power that seemed rather intoxicating right now. The vessel she was in was debating whether or not to hand the piece over to Roland.

But was it right? Her vessel wasn't so sure and therefore, he was confusing Mary. Being in his body was affecting her judgement.

Then there was Samus. Was it a person? What kind of being was it? Something around her exuded power and she found herself wanting it more and more.

But Mary knew that the spear tip did not belong to her and as much as her vessel wanted to keep it and run, she also trusted Roland.

Through considerable effort, she finally got her hand out of her pocket and held the artifact out to Roland. Her eyes pleaded with him. Pleaded for him to take it and take it soon or she wouldn't be able to part from it.

"Woah woah woah," Adriana Lucy stepped forward, as if to block Roland's path. Of course, she had no power to do so, being incorporeal. Things were just moving a little fast for her to keep up. She was just getting her head around the concept of being in a 'living memory' when Roland was talking about changing the future. At least, that's what it sounded like he was saying.

"Set things right?" she questioned. "What does that mean, exactly?" Adriana had no reason to trust Roland, or Mary for that matter, and 'right' was a subjective term. Luke, for example, wasn't entirely 'right' after all. She was probably getting ahead of herself but there was one thing sci-fi movies had taught her was that messing with history was a dangerous and unpredictable business. "Are you sure you know what you are doing?"
