With OWNERSHIP
"There would be little of your physical body left from how I remember you dying. Are you saying the Alliance kept DNA samples in their biolabs? Did they intend to clone an army of psykers from your gene seed?"

"Yes, they intended, but they could not duplicate the Psi Genetic strand with a clone. Science has yet to be able to duplicate the Psi or Supernatural strains.* But they had my remains, and grew it back. Grew me back. To this."
The metallic reconstruction is able to convey little emotion, but there is some, "It was painful."

"But here I am."

"Why are you showing me this? A testament to human's greed is all. They infested a world, drained its resources and set out to the stars to begin the cycle anew. The story is an old one."

"No. Not humans. We are as a rule a more humble lot, not one that seeks our own destruction. A few yes, but it is the influence of the demons that seeks, always seeks to lead us to our own slaughter. Our escape from Earth-that-was has been, at best, temporary. But in a sense you are correct. Instead of preparing for the inevitable, we have competed and finally warred among ourselves."

"I had hoped we could just talk. We used to talk, so long ago. Very well."

The figure in the tank breathes in the azure liquid, almost as in a sigh. The voice continued, this time a course feminine voice, but not from the speaker. Inside his head Belinda Batterly spoke, "These people are here by no accident. The forces that have brought you here, and them; you can stop the demons from gaining a foothold in the verse. Roland. But they need a leader. Someone that can focus them on the task, together. You saw the hell at the end of Earth-that-Was. That's what this is about, preventing that. And in the end, the Nancy Nox seems to offer a salvation as well."

The mix of hope and desparation in the voice, a barely remembered voice from the past, faded.

"For reasons I cannot see, you have been brought here. Prepared for this. You are able. But are you willing?"

Carter City Alliance Medical Research Facility

Dr. Bartolomeo Columbo has arrived to consult the unusual blood culture data that has been collected. There are unusual strains and DNA alteration in many of the animals that have descended from the initial stock on Planet Greenleaf. As a renowed and well published Hematologist and Hematopathologist, his request to visit could not be denied. It was in fact very welcomed.

He and his assistance, Susan Richardson, have just returned from a tour of the facilities and rejoined their other associates, or rather assistants. A distraction presents itself. "Excuse me please." Dr. Columbo leaves them in the plush executive lounge and waiting area.

Assistant Clare/Susan is left with Mary, Pepper, and Victor. They are prepared to take on and exorcise the demon, as soon as they can close the distance to it.

Down a hall and to a less plush room with cheap vending machines he greets an old aquaintance. "Nobby!" He shook the man's hand enthusiastically. "Good to see you. I am sorry, but I've got to shove off for a bit. They're expecting you on the ship, a shuttle will take you there. Very much in a hurry though, do be off. Thanks so much."

Beauchamp isn't given a chance to say much, he's ushered off to a shuttle and whisked away. He is dropped off on another floating building, and another shuttle takes him the the Nancy Nox. The older man driving introduced himself, "I'm Majordomo. Sorry for the rudeness, but we'd prefer our ship remain, with discretion, outside the immediate knowledge of the Alliance."

Roland remains indisposed in the 'cabin' of Ownership.
The bridge holds Janet and Melody. Melody is using the sword to determined the exact location of the demon. Janet has been flying around the Medical Building at a distance, and different elevations while Melody uses the sword to determine exactly where the demon is in the building. Janet passes on the coordinates to her crew-mates in the building.

"Upper floor then, North corner, no doubt about it."
Clare, Barto, Pepper, Denns and Mary hear the voice in their tiny ear piece. Barto has rejoined them after hurriedly seeing Nobby on his way.

"I had hoped we could just talk. We used to talk, so long ago. Very well."

"I confess I remember little of you save your name and your face," he said. "Sometimes memories of my past fragment and are lost as others intrude upon my mind, as if my past incarnations still have a will of their own and fight to be heard. I have lived and died over a hundred times and some of my former selves are simply strangers to me at this point. Tell me, who were we?"

Quote:

"For reasons I cannot see, you have been brought here. Prepared for this. You are able. But are you willing?"

Roland let out a grim laugh. "You speak as if I have a choice in the matter. Tell me, I want to hear the words from your own tongue, why did you appear in my dreams? And why me to lead this crew? I am perhaps the least of them. I have no special connection to this ship save your appearance intruding upon my mind. I was called yes, but for what purpose? Surely there are others on this ship more worthy and able to lead this crew on their tasks. Clare, for instance, who seems adept at everything. Majordomo. Why me?"

The naked body appeared again, close to the glass.

"I did not summon you. The cause of your appearance is not known to me. But as the others have come, so have you. As to how this is arranged, I am curious as well. We are chosen to be be pawns by powers that believe they are above us. Rather you choose to act for humanity, for your puppet masters or for your own self interest; it doesn't seem to matter. But you have decided, at least for now. This ship is a weapon against demonic agents. You are wary enough to understand the manipulations, and above your own torment enough to be able to provide the leadership the others are not yet cabable."

Ownership's voice in his head returned. "You've been pushed to the forefront of this fight, and on a definate side. It's just another battle perhaps. There will be a thousand more, and then again until the end of time. But as long as you are going to fight; then increase the chances for our success and lead them to the gate. The demons have an army waiting to come to the verse. If you won't do it to spare humanity what you saw them do on Earth-that-was; then do it to spare your own soul another rebirth."

"If it means final rest, then I will lead," replied Roland with little enthusiasm. "Though others have fallen under my leadership in the past and few have found benefit from the experience. It seems that those who cross my path do so at at their own folly."

"No doubt you are aware that I am simply a pawn," said Roland. "Whatever leadership I may provide precludes the fact that I am not my own master. I have already determined you to be in league with a being known to me only as The Overseer. From my estimation, it was one of the pantheon of the Lords of Chaos. Seeking ends to its own whims, with follow no discernable rhyme or reason. All I know is that long ago The Overseer saved my soul from perdition in return for a promise of servitude. At some point, I was led to believe, my servitude would be at an end and I would be granted a final respite from the emptiness of hell. Thus I have lived for centuries in an eternal twilight, never able to truly rest. Is it rest you grant?"

The mention of Overseer and Lords of Chaos seems to spark an emotional element of surprise in the psychic link that Belinda/Ownership had established. It is quickly cut off, but only momentarily. "No. We are not in league. This is our venture. Though the ship and my survival have been provided by some loose ties to the Alliance and their own cell to battle the demons; we are independent. But if you have been brought here by one of Chaos, then pawn indeed. But I can be sure to enforce any agreement they have made with you. So yes, if you have been promised peace by this service. I shall see that it is made so."

The vague notions in the essence of what was Belinda Batterley are barely felt, something of a trickster on the horizon; one that enjoys playing with humanity and the demons and the angels; an entity that is of the angelic line, but yet not on either of the angel or demon 'sides'. It seems disconcerting to Belinda, but also clarifying in understanding some of what has happened over the course of years.

Roland gave a rare smile. "So I was wrong and you are not in league. I apologize for my mistake. Though, it is intriguing that there are forces interested in the fate of this ship that have an agenda outside of yours or mine."

"There is one matter," said Roland. "What makes you think the others will submit to my authority? I have little on this ship and you of anyone should know that these individuals have agendas of their own. The ship has a captain already and I am a stranger. I am not fully trusted."

Roland gave a rare smile. "So I was wrong and you are not in league. I apologize for my mistake. Though, it is intriguing that there are forces interested in the fate of this ship that have an agenda outside of yours or mine."

The psychic equivilant of a cynical harumph is felt in his head.

"There is one matter," said Roland. "What makes you think the others will submit to my authority? I have little on this ship and you of anyone should know that these individuals have agendas of their own. The ship has a captain already and I am a stranger. I am not fully trusted."

The screen lit up again with text, and the feminine metallic voice provided the reply, "Name me someone on board that is trusted?"
"Or should be."
"And qualified. Janet Jameson was a defacto selection. Majordomo will speak for you, on my behalf. If any object then let them take the mantle or offer an alternative. Should you agree, then so be it. But you are rudderless, as ships go that is not a good thing. As battles go, much worse."

Bartolomeo and Clare went on a tour of the facilities and had just returned when Bartolomeo went to speak with a man named "Nobby."

The new mechanic, she thought to herself.

Mary smoothed her lab coat (I am assuming that Bartolomeo's assistants would be wearing lab coats) and thought about the amusement that went behind her being a lab assistant for a hematologist. Someone looking through a microscope at little bitty microscopic cells. Even with her enhanced "labor vision," that was too much detail for her to ever see.

She looked over at Denns noticing that he was without his standard leathers. He was fidgeting a bit, feeling uncomfortable, but the leather outfit would have drawn attention to them, even if he was designated as security personnel.

"It's OK," she mouthed at him, hoping that he would see it and not having to say it aloud where the whole group could hear. She knew that Clare did though, since she turned sharply to look over at her, then resumed whatever she was doing.

Bartolomeo rejoined them as a message was heard through the comms in everyone's ear.

"Upper floor then, North corner, no doubt about it."

She projected out as much calming energy as she could. Because he needed her calming influence more than the others, she moved towards Denns a little more, but stayed back enough that he wouldn't feel pressured by her presence.

"Well, I suppose it is time," she said.

Pepper had to remind herself not to nod. Then she suddenly felt all... smiley. And realised she was standing near Denns. And never far from Denns was Mary. Pepper took two big, but she hoped subtle, steps away from the pair and toward Barto.

She knew it was Mary's way; her contribution. But if Pepper wanted calm, she'd sit her ass down and meditate. She liked being a little edgy on a mission. Or labour. Or whatever it was they were doing. The fire came to her easier if she was a little jumpy. Last thing she needed was to be faced with danger and have to take even two precious seconds to go from happy to alarmed to armed. Much better to skip the happy stage altogether.

"Do we have a particular plan this time? The run in and everyone try and kill something approach nearly didn't work last time." She addressed the rest of the crew, but mainly Barto. This was his style of place after all.

On the Nancy Nox:
Ownership and Roland talk.

Janet flies, Nobby is in the engine room (or the bridge if he gets bored - wondering what's up?).

Melody is exhausted:
Quote:

She was .... annoyed.

Here she was, having to hold the Sword at the proper angle for the umpteeth time as they flew around the building. Her arms were tired and her sholders ached. Holding a weapon that weighed nearly fifty pounds from one end with most of the weight in front of you was no fun.

And Janet. Janet with her 'Just one more time.' ... 'And, again' ... Whats that piece of feh-oo tellin ya now.'

She had clearly had enough and grounded the point. The deck sparked as the blade bit into the steel deck an 1/8 of an inch.

She looked at Janet after she had relayed the information to the ground crew.

"I'l be in my quarters" She left the bridge with the unmistakable scent of ozone in the air.

Once in her room, Melody again fell into a deep sleep. It was far from restful

The sword was no longer hers to command. She still had her job to do. She still had her dreams. It had been six years since she was forced to leave the Nox. A trail of blood followed her even here. Her hand were covered with the vile red liquid.

Since the Sword would not answer to her, she had resorted to using her bare hands. Other weapons never seemed to work. Only her hands.

She had ripped off heads and arms and bashed brain cases and popped hearts. She had done it all for so long that she didn't know why she continued.

Except for the dreams. And the memory. She sat down on the rocky ground of Earth-That-Was and her head lolled to her chest. Sleep took her, and as always, the dreams came. Even here, even now, they came.

The dream in her dream was of her last days on the Nox. The Demons had taken several of the crew and the sword would not come to her. She had to kill them all in order to save the 'Verse. Janet had been easy. Mary had been hard. Clare was the last as she plunged her hand throught the woman's chest and took her heart. She showed it to her as fire flared and the light died from the woman's eyes.

Melody awoke screaming.

- - - ( Clare, Barto, Pepper, Denns and Mary )

"Do we have a particular plan this time? The run in and everyone try and kill something approach nearly didn't work last time."Bartolomeo nods in the affirmative. "

"Clare has a magical item. She'll hold it against the Demon's host."
Clare held up a ruby red jewel with elaborate marking carved into it,
"Eye a Agamotto, big mojo." She seemed proud to be holding a talisman of Barto's.
With a little squinting it can be seen to have the markings of a devil's trap.
"This will allow me to do a longer exorcism incantation that will send the Demon back to its realm, rather than just force it from the host."

This didn't sound like much of a plan, 'longer?'. Maybe it spared the host, but ....

"If that doesn't work, I think something very hot from Miss Anderson. Victor to keep away an interruptions?"

A secretary greeted them at a door that by their goodly sense of direction suggested they were in the Upper North Corner of the building.
"Here is that shipment of equipment you wanted to look over Professer Columbo."
She directs them to a large pushcart. Barto opens up the top with a magnetic card.
He starts handing out items, Denns guns and leather, others.
"Wha?" asked the secretary.

"It's ok miss." Replied Bartolomeo Columbo as he strapped on a side arm revolver, then took out a magic book and opened it to a bookmarked place.
"We're scientists."

Carter City Alliance Medical Research Facility : After the Door

Clare stopped Barto from kicking in the door. He nodded knowingly. She did it.

Inside the crew of Nancy Nox spread out in the 20 meter x 20 meter corner office. Two sides were nothing but glass showing other floating buildings and the ocean below and surrounding them. The had entered from the corner opposite a large solid black table. On the desk sitting in a lotus position was a naked man. On rugs in the center, dressed in various toga and sarong were thirteen men and women. They all turned in shock at the interuption. Across the room the naked man looked across toward them.

"I thought you would have arrived before now." From behind the table he took a small autofire weapon and aimed in their direction. He opened fire.

Clare and Barto dove to one side, or rather Clare grabbed Barto and dove to one side.

(( chaos and disorder ensues. the demon is among the 13, not the naked man... it will toss them about a bit... before they realize maybe... the 13 will attack with blades and viciousness that only demonic worshippers should possess. Have some fun, but don't kill the demon... ))

"Of your last point I do not disagree," said Roland. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, centering himself.

"Is this your idea of a cruel joke?" Roland thought, directing his thoughts to the Overseer. "I can almost see you laughing now."

"Very well, the others will follow my authority, take their leave or feel the steel of my blade. It matters little to me what they chose. However, before I take the mantle of leadership I need to know where I'm leading these people to. There must be a goal. You have alluded to demons, but what should be my first goal on this journey?"

"oh yes. The whole gorram thing is funny. Funny I'm stuck in this liquid Oxygen-variant tank, funny you're a man now, funny to listen to Clare and Barto rut like a satyr and a succubus...."

To the last question she shows him more of a collection of visions. The higher level demons of Earth-that-was, unable to follow the bulk of humanity to the 'Verse. Frustration through the passing of time to reach and and renew their domination; and then their lower minions slowly forming a plan. First a foolhardy ship was sent to the interstellar tunnel between the distant stars, the plan to open the gate was thwarted, powers were unleashed.

Another attempt now, the calling of the nine demons to rally the demonic minions that still hide among the population of the 'verse. They seek to return to the ship, where they plan to open the gate and welcome the higher ranking demons to the 'Verse.

Nobby plodded up to the bridge. His hands were covered with grease and he was feeling rather cheerful. "Well, that cooling fan's gunna need replacing soon." He muttered mostly to himself. Cooling fans always need replacing or cleaning or repairing. They are the bane of any technician's existence. He nodded a greeting to Janet. "Hi, I'm Nobby. The new mechanic."
