Fortunado stared at Roland, not so much with worry, but a sort of patience that suggested he'd seen it all and more. Roland being a little wigged out didn't really do more than raise one of his eyebrows. He had a drink waiting on the bar for him though. "We don't have 'local' fire; but this is a nice Paquini Rye Whiskey. An unopened bottle was next to the shot glass of the dark liquid. There were a couple of other bottles on the shellf behind.

Barto and Clare were over next to the crew in the bar, a couple of whom had stood when Roland 'wigged' out. They sat back down.

Fortunado slid a couple keys over, "Number four, it's got a little kitch and a dinette, four small rooms. Little keys for the regular door, big one is for the tunnel."
He looked at Barto and Clare as they walked back over to Roland. "Tunnel's in the basement. You can use it to get from the Big Hall down below back to your apartment, but ya can't go in that way. Got to use the big building... least till one of bigity wigs says otherwise. No guns below, they'll check em down below, or ya can just leave em."

Fortunado raised his eyebrows to suggest he'd be open to questions, he'd figured them for first timers at Tortuga.

Barto spoke quietly, "We've got a ride Roland. Crew of the Ranger over there." The small lady raised a solid colored mug to Roland in a sort of Captain to Captain salute. Barto extended his hand for Roland to to shake.

A couple of the men from one of the tables got up and walked passed their table as the waitress brought drink and food.

The looked over the three women of Nancy Nox, stepped out to the street and looked up and down it.

They turned back, "Seems like a good afternoon for some strippin' down in the cool air of cargo deck, git the mattresses out, have a good long go."
He looked at the three women, though he left it slightly up in the air if he was talkinng to them, or his buddy.

"You have been very helpful, thank you," said Roland handing the man a few extra chits as a means of gratitude. "We may need foodstuffs and strong drink later, but I can assure you we'll be quiet and cause you no trouble. Oh, and one more thing, these parts do not seem traveled much and I can tell that you take a strong pride in your community's independence. Coming into town it was not lost on me that the townsfolk will do what is necessary to keep troublemakers out. Have you had recent experiences with outsiders looking to stir up trouble?"

Roland shook Barto's hand and nodded at the woman. He disliked the need for outside help but trusted that Barto knew what he was doing.

"Trouble? Yes, from time to time. Seems there's always some disreputable pirate that thinks they'll just make off with everything. 'bout the only reason that everyone tosses in together here." He looked over at the crew of Ranger, leaned closer. "Could be the Captains will ask you to contribute, if you're trusted. Don't ask me how to get that standing though. They got their ways."

Fortunado seemed to present himself as a simple bartender, but his accent and demeanor were not lost on Roland. He was a man of higher sophistication and education than some lowly hole in the wall bar keep. But then the rim was near half full of such folk.

Mary scowled at Pepper when she used the poster to hit her hand away from the waitress.

"Sorry 'bout that miss, my friend's got a thing for pretty young girls. We're training her out of it, and she usually behaves, but best you come to my side when you serve the drinks."

That made Mary even more mad.

"What right do you have to deny anyone else of a calming touch," she spat. "Her aura reeks of pain and she's obviously not had a decent night's sleep in a couple of days!"

Mary was shifting uncomfortably in her seat, staring off at the woman as she worked. She was trying desperately to ignore her calling.

"Just because you don't want any peace doesn't mean that others don't want it either," Mary continued as she watched the waitress closely, still shifting in her seat. Mary watched the girl disappear into the back room. She figured it would be a storage room or the kitchen. She stood up, keeping her eyes locked on the door where the girl disappeared. "I'll be back. I need to go to the ladies room."

Then she strode away, making a beeline for the waitress, which happened to be in the opposite direction as the restrooms.

"What right do you have to deny anyone else of a calming touch," she spat. "Her aura reeks of pain and she's obviously not had a decent night's sleep in a couple of days!"

Pepper's eyes grew wide for a second, then thinned to feral splits. The temperature, unsurprisingly, went up.

"Just because you don't want any peace doesn't mean that others don't want it either...I'll be back. I need to go to the ladies room."

"Does she think I'm ruttin stupid?" Pepper muttered, possibly to Melody, then got out of her chair and followed Mary.

It seemed both the women were completely ignoring the invitation of the other crew, which was probably just as well for the guys.

"You hypocritical bitch," Pepper growled at Mary as she caught up to her and cut her off. "You ask what right I've got to deny calm? I ask what the fuck gives you the right to force it on someone." Pepper was seething now, and the heat she was giving off instantly melted all the ice in the bucket on the bar next to them. Little wafts of steam started drifting up from the bucket's rim.

"You feel the anger I've got going now? You feel that? That's you. All you. If you'd kept your... your... slimy, incubus hands to yourself, you perverted, infected doxie, I wouldn't be mad enough to melt the paint off the walls. Do I seem calm? You forced yourself on me, no choice, no respect. And you think you're doing good things? You touch that girl without telling her exactly what you are, what you do and getting her god damned permission in triplicate and I'll boil the water in your eyeballs. To start with."

The temperature went up several more notches. Then stopped. If anyone had been paying attention to Pepper's temper tantrums in the past, they'd notice this was pretty mild by comparison. Sure, she was being literal when she talked about the paint melting, but that was the extent of the property damage and the waitress a few paces away seemed more perturbed by what she was hearing than by the heat.

In fact everyone in the bar seemed a little perturbed, looking from Pepper to Mary then back again. Maybe Pepper hadn't realised the double meaning her choice of words might have for those listening.

Mary was walking with a determined gait towards the door that the waitress disappeared through when Pepper interrupted her.

"You hypocritical bitch. You ask what right I've got to deny calm? I ask what the fuck gives you the right to force it on someone."

Mary tilted her head and looked at Pepper who Mary could feel the anger rolling off her in waves.

"You feel the anger I've got going now? You feel that? That's you. All you. If you'd kept your... your... slimy, incubus hands to yourself, you perverted, infected doxie, I wouldn't be mad enough to melt the paint off the walls. Do I seem calm? You touch that girl without telling her exactly what you are, what you do and getting her god damned permission in triplicate and I'll boil the water in your eyeballs. To start with."

Mary looked at Pepper and then at the door, her mind warring against itself. Both of them needed calmed. The waitress and Pepper. She had an uncontrollable need to calm them. Both of them. The pull to do it was intense. It was like a drug. A drug that she needed in order to keep on an even keel. She wondered if this was what it was like when a vampire needed to feed. Is that what she was doing? Using the calm to feed whatever need that had invaded her body and soul since Bartolomeo gave her the blood that was tainted with Clare's.

She looked at the door, then at Pepper and then back at the door.

"I'm sorry, Pepper," Mary whispered as a tear slid down her face. "I didn't want to invade your privacy, but... but... you don't understand. I can't help it. I can't resist the urge ever since Bartolomeo gave me Clare's blood."

She looked at the door again, then stepped back towards it.

"I have to go," Mary told her as she took another step back. "I'm sorry. She's in pain and I have to help. I can't stop. I have to..."

Then with inhuman speed, Mary was gone. She had disappeared through the door, bolting it behind her. She looked up and saw the walk in refrigerator door open. She could sense the woman's pain emanating from within.

"There you are," she whispered as she walked in and closed the door, projecting calmness all around her.

"Excuse me, Miss. I couldn't help but notice you seemed a little stressed earlier," Mary said to her. "I'd like to help you. I have a gift."

The waitress backed up against the one shelf. Mary reached out and gently touched her on the wrist.

"See? It feels better already, doesn't it?" Mary asked with a warm, compassionate smile as the waitress nodded, her body relaxing. "I don't want to harm you in any way. I just want to help. This won't hurt at all, I promise."

"Somehow I think the disreputable and unruly you can handle. There's always that something else out here on the frontier, though. Those are the types you have to watch your back around. There are your usual pirates and ne'er-to-wells out here, sure, but sometimes strange types from the Core come out here thinking they can stake their own piece of things. It happened after the war, but not as much these days. Still, sometimes you see strange Core-types out here who feel entitled to their piece of the spoils being on the side of the victors and all."

He finished his glass and put the cork back on the bottle. "I am much obliged for your hospitality sir, but I must go inform my people of the sleeping arrangements. You've been more than helpful."

AT THE CAFE

The waitress backed up against the one shelf. Mary reached out and gently touched her on the wrist.

"See? It feels better already, doesn't it?" Mary asked with a warm, compassionate smile as the waitress nodded, her body relaxing. "I don't want to harm you in any way. I just want to help. This won't hurt at all, I promise."

Mary felt the loss of hope, the long lengths of depression in the woman. They slipped away, and a chance to get away crept into her, a new life, opportunity, a chance always there if you only reached for it. The waitress stood a little taller, her eyes narrowed, a confidence that she'd had returned. She looked around, see things again; looking for a better life.

"HEY!" The waitress's hand jerked away from Mary as the owner spoke. "Get to those eggs-suckers upstairs. Another bottle and another ball uh dope."
The waitress stumbled away.

The men from the table seemed to move away, the indifference of the women of Nox seemed to be a bit intimidating. "When you're ready for a stiff drink with the Anarchy,...." But they seemed to have lost their zeal to approach the women. Or maybe they just seemed to be crazy.

Melody took the opportunity to slip the sword of Seamus a bit from it's scabbard. It wanted to go deep, under the cafe. A demon was close in some under chamber.

AT THE TAVERN

"..... It happened after the war, but not as much these days. Still, sometimes you see strange Core-types out here who feel entitled to their piece of the spoils being on the side of the victors and all."

"Well thar be plenty a skalawags in the piratin' bizness." Fortunado exaggerated a pirate-like drawl which brought a grin to his own lips. "But I git your drift guv'ner."

Roland finished his glass and put the cork back on the bottle. "I am much obliged for your hospitality sir, but I must go inform my people of the sleeping arrangements. You've been more than helpful."

"Keep a close on your lads'n'lass then Captain Lucifer a Perdition's Flames." Fortunado's voice was normal again as he raised a glass in salute that he had just taken from a rinser and started to rub it down with a towel.

Mr. Freeze's voice came in low over a comm from behind the bar, "Fortunada... ain't nothing on the scanner, we're coming up for a drink."

"I await with the anticipation of a milkmaid to the visit of her secret prince of the castle." He stated flatly.

"UHa. wha.."
A moment while Mr. Freeze digested that...
"Fuck you Fortunada, jiss pour out summa them frozen pussy drinks with the berries."

Roland left Barto and Clare with their new crew, or whoever it was or however it had been they had so quickly gained passage.

He spotted the others scattered about the cafe at the bottom of the stair, which led right from the Tavern to the outdoor seating of the Cafe.

Mary felt better. She didn't feel so desperate to calm someone any more. She wanted to stay with the waitress a little longer, but she seemed to have given her spirits a leg up.

The boss though... he annoyed her. Yelling at the waitress like that.

Néng bâo (worthless scoundrel), she thought.

Now that she'd had her "fix," Mary went back out into the cafe and rejoined the table, making sure to smirk once she made eye contact with Pepper.

"I'm better now," Mary announced. "Let's get this show on the road."

Roland made his way back to the cafe with a bottle of firewater in tow and a shotgun slung behind his back, beneath his coat so as not to be obvious. Spotting the ladies' table he casually walked over and pulled up a seat.

"We have rooms now. I'll wager they're not much but they're relatively safe and will keep the rain off your heads. The tavern serves a stout firewater, by the way. Not much to do in these parts except drink and stay unemployed, I'll wager."

"Did I miss anything?" he said, lighting a cigarette.

House number 4 was clearly marked. After getting a short update on the activity in the cafe Roland led them around the muddy small courtyard to their apartment. It was near dusk.

The door opened with the key Roland had been provided. Inside was a small entryway, a table and eight chairs crowded around it and a very small kitchenette. A short hall lead to four very small rooms each with a small bed and nightstand. It was all neat and clean, very sparse. A couple of bullet holes, a splotch of very old blood on the kitchen floor... or one would wise to assume as much. On the table is an explanation, "at foor bells all may enter great hall by the main buildin"

And in the short hall an obvious trap door that pulled up and revealed steep stairs down. A flight below, a turn; then another flight that led to a solid thick wood door reinforced with steel. A small sign explains the key opens it, but it's bolted from the other side. One may not use it without first having been to the great hall. Melody indicates the sword is telling her the demon is beyond the door, but not close.

A bell rang above them, faintly. Then it rang three more times.

The lock to the apartment was an archaic mechanical one, prone to jamming and this one was no different. The key was particularly fussy and required some finesse to finally open the door. Thankful that he did not have to seek out the help of the establishment he entered a room that looked like an anachronism. Styled in only the most spartan of furnishings, it had an ancient wood-burning stove with which to derive warmth.

"I fear we'll have little time to enjoy our humble lodgings," said Roland. "I get a sense of unease about this place, as if something evil is very near. My friends be on your guard, for our lives are in danger I fear."

"It seems like an invitation...or perhaps a summons?"

Roland waited for something to happen. Loading his shotgun he held it at ready.

He delivered a hard kick to the door hoping that the four bells removed any lock natural or unnatural upon it. Bracing himself he waited to see what was beyond the door.

The apartment was indeed of a "bare bones" variety. The furniture was sparse and they were of simple design.

Good for me, Mary thought. Nice and uncluttered.

She heard the bells sound and then followed Roland down the trap door to the stairs, down to the very strong large door. It wasn't a normal door. She got the perception that it was fortified in some way.

Roland gave the door a hard kick, but the door didn't even budge.

"They never do things the easy way, do they?" she asked. No normal doors; they always have to be double strong, enchanted or with funky locks. "Maybe someone has to let us in?"

Pepper could burn the door if it was made out of suitable materials,
she thought. But being in an enclosed space with no real ventilation, she didn't want to become asphyxiated at the end of some stairwell. Or maybe Melody's sword could cut through it.

A muffled voice is heard on the other side. "Just a second." Shuffling and a bit of pounding followed, then the door opened into a short passage that led into the great hall.

Mr. Freeze was there. He cleaned up pretty good, though his eyes were glazed over from something.

"Whataya doin' ya supposed to come in the main building and the ... ah fuckit, go over there ta check yor weapons." He pointed them across the hall to the opened entry door. A guard with a small multi purpose weapon waved them over friendly enough. The small weapon had a Machine Gun and stun capability. Each of the few guards had one. A couple of obvious crews were sitting at a couple of the tables. Waitress women of the Piraty wench sort were bringing out food and lots of booze.

They had entered from a small portal hall with a number four painted over the slight arch of the entry. "Lock your door." Freeze joking chastized them.

Once all shooting weapons they're prepared to give up (none are allowed to be openly displayed, nor are any allowed, but no one is searched) are secured, Mr. Freeze leads them around, a point at the boss's office. "Captain Fedora." Then back through the main hall and a peek at the kitchen, he grabs a wench's bottom as she goes by along with a cold beer.

The hall was already a bit smoky, but some fans and small vents in the vaulted ceiling over head kept it pretty clear. The light came from actual burning torches and regular cheap bulbs scattered about. The only obvious restrictions on tables was the one sitting a meter above the rest of the hall. A guard stood at the top of the steps. There was no one up there except for another guard.

Melody shook her head no, to indicate the demon was not in the room. She looked below somewhere. They were close, but still without any certainty of where or who the demon was in.

"Any table ya like, and stick with the beef HHAAAH." He slapped Roland with the back of his hand on the chest. The crew that Roland had seen at the tavern had entered and took a table. Those from the Cafe were nearby. Freeze introduced them.
"Ah, there be Captain Rossi and his mate, Charlie right?" Charlie gave him a hard look, which Freeze ignored. Freeze motioned back and forth, "This is Lucifer. Anarchy'n' Fires redemption or what..? " He looked back and Roland, though he really didn't seem to care.

There was a strong feeling that Nancy Nox was lowest in the pecking order. Freeze Belched..."Perdition's Flame. Sorry. Anarchy here brought in the slaves, Citizen types. should be fun." Something got his attention, "Hey you fucking dog, don't you fucking move." He headed over to greet some youngish Chinese gentleman that had just entered.
