A wench walked right up Roland. Her legs were spread a little, she had a tray with various bottles on it. "Beef, roast er barb'n qued, chicken any way, greens a bean and whites and navy; whiskey, rum'n vodka; beers kegged." She looked them over. It's a hunderd a piece for all ya kin eat, or drink or rut." She looked over at the women, "or if ya got crew that'll take on any's then no charge fer em." The wench looked at them with appreciation. "you a pimper?"

As soon as they entered the underground area, Mary felt... sick. She didn't know quite why, but she branched out her powers to see if she could find out. As the crew went towards the place where they had to give up their shootable weapons, it grew stronger. Luckily, they didn't take Mary's staff, especially since she was leaning on it a little.

As they neared the Great Hall, it was getting worse. She reached out, found Roland's elbow and wrapped her hand delicately around it. Then she realized why she wasn't feeling so well.

She never did well in large crowds. She could hear the echo of multiple voices. She could smell the multitude of aromas of the food and drink available. She could tell there were multiple sources and types of light. It was a type of sensory overload and it was playing havoc with her Blind Sight.

"There's too much stimuli," she whispered to Roland. "It's kinda like an overl-"

Her speech was abruptly cut off as they stepped into the Great Hall. She stopped just as abruptly, stumbling a little as she let go of Roland's arm. An onslaught of emotions invaded her mind: terror, despair, sadness, dark thoughts and even those who were thinking of doing harm to others. They needed calmed. They all needed calmed. She closed her eyes and swayed a bit, fighting to keep upright.

"Perdition's Flame. Sorry. Anarchy here brought in the slaves, Citizen types. should be fun."

Slaves. That explained the terror and despair.

She whimpered a little as she couldn't stop the emotions from invading her mind. She was also having a hard time fighting off the utter compulsion to reach out and touch every single one of them. This was worse than what she felt back in the cafe. The urge was unrelenting. She took a step forward as she struggled to keep herself in control. It wasn't working. So she did the only thing she could do.

She shut down.

She closed off her powers and herself.

She became as normal as she could make herself.

She became blind in all sense of the word.

She became defenseless.

Pepper was absolutely livid with Mary. It was at the point where she'd started fantasising about melting the floor directly in front of Mary as the woman walked. And it wasn't her conscience that was stopping her; it was the idea Mary might see it and simply step around and give Pepper that self satisfied little smirk from the cafe. And then Pepper knew she wouldn't be able to stop herself melting the woman instead of the floor.

They entered the hall, a few people gave up weapons, a few people didn't. Pepper put two knives down on the table and smiled widely at the man doing the collecting. She felt rather smug knowing she wasn't giving up her main weapon. It did make her wonder though; how many others in the room were like those of the Nox? Or Curly's ilk? Surely her ship couldn't have the majority on weird in the 'verse, specially when she knew there was a Demon here somewhere.

Then there was the concern of what said Demon might be capable off. There was that one that had almost blocked her from her own power. But then, she was much stronger now. The faint and fading memory of a corridor came back to her for a moment. Triggered by the thought of her power? Pepper frowned.

But introductions were being made and Pepper's attention was drawn outward rather than in. The image of the corridor faded and a moment later, she didn't even remember having thought of it.

Pepper glared at the woman for a moment, then said, "We'll all be paying, thanks all the same." And stepped past the woman into the room proper, leaving the actual paying up to Roland.

She didn't notice anything wrong with Mary, but then, she was making a decided effort to forget the woman exsisted.

Roland stopped before shattering the door with his boot. No matter their business at hand it still did not ingratiate yourself as a visitor to enter by smashing in a door and waving around a shotgun.

"I'm glad whoever's on the other side sounds like they won't kill us on sight," said Roland as he waited for the door to open. "I died two lifetimes in a row by barging into the wrong place at the wrong time. Let me tell you, the shock of sudden death is something you *never* get used to."

Roland allowed Mr. Freeze to show them around. He was in no mood to be sociable but managed to keep the facade of at least passing interest.

Quote:

"Any table ya like, and stick with the beef HHAAAH."

Roland's eyes narrowed and he whispered, "Don't touch me."

He wasn't sure if Freeze heard and frankly he didn't care. Flying around the 'Verse searching out the dregs of the interdimensions was beginning to grate on him. This searching made him weary.

"Just...passing through," said Roland dismissively. "We wish to be alone for the time being but should we require anything I'll let you know. Thank you."

"Now," said Roland his face darkening. "This isn't the kind of place I normally like to frequent. I'd really like to spend as little time here as possible so I'd like to find our diabolical friend and send it back to the nearest convenient plane, dimension or alternate reality. So Melody, shall I draw a pentacle on the floor and say 'I summon thee' three times? Or maybe not...I'm not sure that wouldn't simply cause Clare to appear in a big puff of smoke."

The room filled. Other Captains and Mates filed in.

A couple took chairs at the table on the raised platform.

Melody took out the Sword of Seamus. She held it above the table, as though showing it to them, told them the demon was below. But very close. The numerous doors left a great many options. She shrugged, she was eager to get to the fight, but closing in on the demon seemed an impossible choice.

Introductions of various Captains was taking place. Mr. Freeze provided the words and commentary. His words were half garbled and not many paid much attention. Focus was on getting drinks and food to the tables. "Captain Clegg of Scarecrow."

A woman dressed like some sort of fantasy sword and sorcery video heroine approached their table. "A very mighty weapon. True Earth it is yes?"
Melody indicated it was. Before anyone could shoo her away, she had drawn one of her own. She held in on their table, pointed up. The sword could have been the sister of Melody's. Similar, yet different with companion symbols and strokes of the metal work of the handle.
The woman then looked up. Raised the sword at a couple of odd angles.
Melody did the same.

The two sword women seemed about to speak when a roar went up among the throng. "FEDORA!" Shouts and cheering as woman entered from the kitchen, lept from table to table to the front plotform.

"Yo ho ho you scurvy whore-ruttin' swabbies." She was dressed up to, like an old time pirate.

The entire great hall looked and sounded like a stage production of some old Captain Bluebeard of the Black vid.

After shutting herself down, Mary got separated a bit from the others. She was sure they were nearby, but there were so many voices. For all she knew they were only feet away.

She tentatively and as inconspicuous as she could, extended her arm and reached for anything nearby, but found nothing. She was a bit turned about from the mental onslaught she received earlier, so she gently ran her staff along in front of her until she hit a wall of some sorts. She went to touch it but then realized it was a stage. She was in the process of turning around to face the other way when she heard.

"FEDORA!"

There were shouting and cheering as she heard the stomp of feet coming towards her, but the noise of the approaching people was not on the floor, it was more hollow sounding. Could they be walking on top of the tables? She moved to get out of the way of the people that were getting closer to her position, but got too close to one of them and was pushed back. She fell to the floor, losing grip on her staff.

"Yo ho ho you scurvy whore-ruttin' swabbies."

Mary didn't know what was going on, but got on her hands and knees and started to feel around for her staff.

So much for being inconspicuous, she thought.

"Excuse me," said Roland politely.

"Excuse me..." as the two women compared swords.

"EXCUSE ME!" Roland yelled, getting up from his chair and his eyes flaring with annoyance.

"Now no one told me this was a themed restaurant," he said to Miss Renfaire. "Now unless you and the good folk here are about to break into a rousing rendition of an old and dear sea shanty I must insist you lower your weapon."

His hand was on the butt of his shotgun and another was on the short blade at his side. [/color]

Someone grabs a quick hold on Mary back right cheek.

"Knock it off." A firm voice called. "She's crew of someone."
"She lookin like a ponygirl needin' a ride tah..."
There's a scuffling of feet,
"Steady lads, no trouble... Not witt miszzer Migsy 'ere, Too Ruttin' early."

The firm voice spoke again, closer to Mary's ear, a hand lifts her by her arm, his fingers barely touch a portion of a bare arm.
"All right lass, let's get you back to yours."

Though closed off Mary can feel a strong presence, a sureness. Though not a fully settled person, not one needing a letting go or relief.
"What's your ship then Lass?"

Viking woman lowered her sword, "Sorry. But this sword?" She looked toward Melody, who reluctantly put her own sword away. Melody turned to Roland.

"The others," Melody looked up. "I think they're closer."
Then she lookd down, "and the one down there, moving."

"So it is something real, something true?" ask the Viking.
Melody looked at her again. "Yes. I'm Melody."
"Belit." and they grasped hand and forearm like some ancient sisters of the sword.

"All right then, look, before ya get too drunk."
A lot of whooping.
"Let's get a matter settled, got a runaway."
More whooping, some booing.
Captain Fedora moved to a door behind her and a woman was pushed out. It was the waitress from the cafe in the Villagio.
"Little indendure bitch tried to run, tried to get on the good ship Burning Life." Fedora raised a glass to two women in odd but somewhat fashionable dress for a border world maybe. They sat with a couple of burly men obviously serving as body guards. "Thank you Captains Anna and Lisa for turning her in."

Fedora dragged the waitress out to the front of the platform just as Mary and Miggs stood.
"But I tire of this wench, so ...

She be for sale!"

A man approach the table of Nancy/Perdition's Fire.
"I'm Bubing, is everything alright?"
He spoke to Pepper, but look cautiously at Roland.

He seemed calm, his hands in plain sight.
"Ah, Yesser," answered Belit, "I startled them a bit, look; she's got a sword like mine."
"How exciting." He answered with very little emotion.

"Oh for the love of..." muttered Pepper as the bidding started. She was doing way to much muttering lately she thought. And cursing. And would likely do some more, especially with Mary being the little upstart bitch she was at the moment. Pepper looked around for the woman in question, spotted her and scowled. Another thing she was doing too much of. She got up to go to Mary and see what she thought of the predicament she'd gotten the waitress into. She paused on her way past Roland.

"Cap," she said, "Mary sucked the unhappy out of that girl for sale up there. She's the reason the woman's about to become the slave of one of -" her nose crinkled with distate as she indicated the room at large, "- these. Since Mary's your crew and you didn't see fit to chain her up or knock her on the head after she attacked me, I think it's your responsibility. And your coin." With that, Pepper finally wandered over to Mary, slipping between the crowd in some cases, shoving them aside in others.

Making sure there was no way for the other woman to touch her bare skin, Pepper took the arm not held by the strange man. "Hi, I'm her crew. Thanks. Bye." Pepper was very pointed about it, and although she was polite, she wasn't going out of her way to be friendly. Somewhere, deep down, she knew, just knew, she could burn the entire room down if she wanted. And there wasn't any she could see here that could stop her. Except maybe the holy swords having a get together at the table she'd just left.

She paused a moment, literally shaking such thoughts from her head. Her crew, as much as she might not be best pals with all of them at the moment, were in that room. Along with a lot of innocents. She didn't want to burn down a room full of people anyway. Where had a thought like that sprung from? It had something to do with... Pepper growled and pushed all the thoughts to the back of her head for later. Right now, there were other things that needed sorting.

She spun Mary roughly around to face the woman being sold. "Do you see that? That's your fault that is." Then something in the way Mary's eyes were set and the shakiness of the woman in general made Pepper frown some more. She was acting like she had before they'd gone Demon hunting before. Like she really truly was just some little blind woman. Had her sight gone again? Pepper grinned, though there was no real humor in the look. Karma, she thought. Payback for touching people who didn't want to be touched.

"You can't see can you?" Pepper's grin widened. "Then I'll tell you. That woman? The waitress from earlier? The one I told you to stay away from?" She watched Mary's face to make sure the woman was paying attention and remembering all the right things. "She's up there, on stage, in front of all these vile pirates and slavers and rapists. And she's for sale." Again Pepper let it sink in before going on. "Seems she decided she'd had enough of life here. Struck out for greener pastures. Somehow, she got bold enough to forget what would happen to her and she tried to leave without paying her indenture or at least getting help from somewhere. I wonder, did you offer her help when you made her oh so happy? Did you even think of what her life was, what her choices were when you made her so bold? Or did you just feed your greedy bitch self, put a smug little grin on your face and waltz back out to tell me how much better a judge of right and wrong you are than me?"

Pepper's words dripped venom. And she was enjoying it. She didn't even notice that this wasn't what she'd usually do in this sort of situation. Her temper was one thing, but this hitting someone where she knew it would hurt, and calmly, without any heat in her body or her words... If she'd thought of him, she'd have been shamed by what her Sensei would have said of her behaviour. But she didn't think of him. Hadn't thought of her Sensei in some time...

"That's them," Captain Porter indicated the table of the crew of... "Nancy Nox. Though I don't see Majordomo."

"Still, they should be willing to take you on. Tell them you're hunters, seeking refuge, redemption, or just feel like killing bad things that go bump in the night."

"Hey." responded her first mate.

"Not you," she said. "You're a good thing that goes bump in the night."

First Mate Clayton smiled. They'd be out of it soon. Leaving the game, hunters no more. The ship was sold off, they had passage. Helping the remaining members of their crew find a good home, a ship to hunt from, that was all that remained.

"Don't worry." Jane Porter said, with a bit of sarcasm as she watched the crew; one of them half wailing or carrying on about something. Sly Mister Miggs of Scarecrow trying to slink in and score who know what... "I'm sure they're very nice folks."

To Mullin and Luke, who knew their Captain well, she wasn't particularly reassuring.

"Hi, I'm her crew. Thanks. Bye."

Mary noticed the edge in Pepper's voice. Not wanting to leave whoever helped her with a reason to not like the crew (which could be very dangerous, based on what she could glean before she had to shut down), she turned towards where he was still holding her arm.

"Thank you kind sir," she said sweetly. "I just got turned about a little."

Pepper pulled her away a little and spun her around.

"Do you see that? That's your fault that is."

Mary just stared unseeing in front of her. Pepper hadn't given her enough details to know what she was talking about.

"You can't see can you?"

Pepper seemed almost gleeful that she couldn't. She didn't understand what had happened and why she was that way. She tried to explain.

"Everything in the room, it was too much-"

But Pepper cut her off.

"Then I'll tell you. That woman? The waitress from earlier? The one I told you to stay away from? She's up there, on stage, in front of all these vile pirates and slavers and rapists. And she's for sale. Seems she decided she'd had enough of life here. Struck out for greener pastures. Or did you just feed your greedy bitch self, put a smug little grin on your face and waltz back out to tell me how much better a judge of right and wrong you are than me?"

Mary somehow kept her calm. She was sure that little outbursts like Pepper's wouldn't help their image while there.

"She gave me permission once I let her have a very, very small taste," Mary countered. "You didn't see what I did when I calmed her. She was planning on running away already. I just gave her a better chance by calming her nerves a bit, but her boss interrupted. Even with what I could do, I gave her a better chance for success. She would have a clearer head; make better decisions, but like I said, we were interrupted.

"She just didn't get as far as she wanted to and that makes my heart very sad, but she was already enduring nightly rapes by her owner. So now at least, she has a chance. She could be lucky and get bought by a crew merely looking for a cook. Or she would be able to get off planet on one of the other ships thus giving her a better chance of escape. Either way, I think she will be better off, don't you?"

Mary let out a snort.

"But I shouldn't hope that you would see the logical conclusion to this story. Your mind is closed off. You are sure that your way is the only way and that isn't always true," she said turning towards Pepper. "I wouldn't be surprised if your arrogance didn't get us all killed. Either by a bad decision or by your own hand.

"So just get me back to the rest of the crew. I'll be better when we get away from the crowd."

Luke

The first thing Luke noticed about the crew of Nancy Nox was that they did not look like the kind of people he wanted to spend a lot of time with. But then, he didn't want to spend a lot of time with anyone.

The first thing his sister noticed, however, was the guy with the long dark hair and an air of mystery about him. "He's hot," she informed Luke with a goofy wide-eyed grin.

Luke groaned and rolled his eyes, but as he sipped from his beer he allowed himself a small smile. Adriana Lucy had been dead for almost a year, but her taste in men hadn't changed a bit. A girl so sweet and bright and full of light, of course she always fancied the bad boys.

Luke raised his eyebrows with a small flicker towards Mullin. Luke had thought his sister had a thing for the other mechanic. "Oh, he's hot too," she laughed, glancing at Mullin but then turning quickly back to the tall, dark and dangerous.

Luke shrugged to himself, and studied Mullin's expression. He couldn't exactly call the man a friend, barely even an acquaintance, but he would be Luke's only ally when it came to ingratiating themselves into a new crew. Luke didn't say anything, wondering what Mullin was thinking.

After another moment of thought, Luke stood from the chair, twirling it out from his legs and spinning it back the correct way around to the table in one careless motion. He downed what was left of his beer - about half the bottle - and then tossed it aside.

"Right," he said to himself, as he took a few heavy steps forward. He moved purposefully in a take-no-gose kind of way and did a pretty successful job of hiding the fact that he felt nervous. "You coming?" he practically growled at Mullin, whether he had started moving already or not.
