"Sorry. But this sword?"

"No, the one up your arse," snapped Roland unamused. "I'm in no mood for games and if your friend touches a member of my crew again," he said motioning to the man who put his hand on Mary, "He'll find himself drawing back a stump, dong ma?"

Quote:

"I'm Bubing, is everything alright?"

"We're all still standing and no one's bleeding so I'd say we're close enough to alright for the moment."

Quote:

"Cap," she said, "Mary sucked the unhappy out of that girl for sale up there. She's the reason the woman's about to become the slave of one of -" her nose crinkled with distate as she indicated the room at large, "- these. Since Mary's your crew and you didn't see fit to chain her up or knock her on the head after she attacked me, I think it's your responsibility. And your coin."

"If you have any issue with Mary then get it resolved," snapped Roland with a scowl. "Or get the fuck off my ship, either way I won't have you torching anyone who's taken safe passage with me. And one more...wait, did you just suggest I buy a girl?"

Quote:

Or did you just feed your greedy bitch self, put a smug little grin on your face and waltz back out to tell me how much better a judge of right and wrong you are than me?"

"Pepper! Please contain yourself for the moment; you're not helping. One Fifty!" yelled Roland not believing what he was doing.

"Part of this is coming out of your cut of the ship's take," he whispered to Pepper as he awaited any further bidders.

Bubing and Belit watched Roland with something between disinterest and dismay. Bubing returned to his own table, spoke to his crew of four there; they looked in the Nancy Nox direction then returned their interest to the bidding.

Belite and Melody moved to the back wall near the Nancy Nox table. They moved their swords, Melody explaining and pointing; Belit much interested.

...

The man that had assisted Mary moved easily away, avoiding the conflict between Mary and Pepper. The two women returned to their table.

"Captain" of the Jolly Roger Tavern

Captain Fedora walked along the front of the platform. She was looking over the gathered throng, using the auction to size up the evening's attendees. The woman in the middle front of the platform as the bidding had stopped at one hundred. A woman had made the bid, another next to her was giving her a rousing difficult time about it. Fedora spotted them and laughed, "Well, Captain Anna, looks like you.."

" . . One Fifty!" Was heard over the entire gathering.

"wha... " and "ha ha."
"serving wench must have some skills..."

Captain Fedora turned toward Roland. "Ah. One of our new Captains. She curtseed long and low, cleavage spilled a bit and she wavered some too; from what looked to be slight inebriation. Or a subtle bit of tickery. She pulled her sword, touched her nose and let it slowly swish to the side as she bowed again. "Captain Lucifer of Perdition's Flames." Fedora stomped her foot and most everyone grumbled out a "HOR - UmpPH!" Laughed and gave a single pound to their table.

"And sold Captain." With a move of her head Mr. Freeze fetched the girl as Fedora introduced another new crew to Tortuga. "Captain Rossi of Anarchy."

"HOR - UmphPH!" thump!

Mr. Freeze left the woman standing next to Roland, took the coin and paper of the price. "Guh luck with that one there Captain, she's got a real 'tude of a sudden."
The woman just straightened herself up a bit, tried to be brave; looked it some, but seemed to realize she'd lost.

Another woman was brought out and sold while the Nancy Nox crew took stock of their situation. The woman for sale was hardly as attractive as the waitress, and she beckoned for bidders, teased them with flashes of her body. She sold for a third of what the waitress had.

Pepper simply shook her head at Mary. "Don't be so stupid. I never said I was right. Just that you were wrong. Putting words in people's mouths as well as feelings in their heads. Tch tch. Who's the egotist now?"

Then she changed her grip on Mary's arm, shifting her feet at the same time and very quickly, span the other woman around. She made sure Mary kept her footing, but then moved silently away, leaving the blind woman there. Pepper wondered if calling out 'Marco' at this point would be funny to anyone other than her. But then, suddenly, she didn't care anymore. The woman was a fool, thinking herself so far above. She was the liability, running around, forcing attentions on people, unable to see what she'd done... There was a yell off to one side and Pepper lost the thought she'd been following.

Seeing the shout was nothing, Pepper wondered for a moment what the strange pirate looking woman selling the waitress would think if she knew who'd so happily 'helped' her slave run away? But no. It would doubtless end up being a waste of her time and Pepper didn't feel like wasting any more time on Mary. The idea that it might be wrong to sell out one of her own crew, and more than likely start a fight never even entered Pepper's thoughts.

She snorted lightly at Roland. "Good luck with taking my money for Mary's blunder. Let her pay for it." Then she turned her focus on those who were watching her crew. There seemed to be a couple of young men, looked like they might be headed over. Then Roland bid on, and won the waitress and then everyone was looking.

Pepper noticed Mary had made it safetly back to the table, but paid her no heed after that. Not worth it...

The Captain too... Get off his ship, he'd said. As if she'd really waste flame torching Mary? But she'd have to watch him. He was getting too big for himself. She'd been invited before he was, after all. And she had more reason to be on the Nox, to her thinking. Pepper kept an eye on Melody as well through all of this. Melody was the one who could find the Demon, and Pepper very badly wanted to find the Demon. There were answers there, she just knew it. And for some reason, for the first time in a long time, she felt strong; powerful. Confident enough to want to see a Demon, rather than wish there were some other way to find her answers. No doubt the Captain would be happy enough about her torching things then.

(OOC: I figured with Mary's own fighting skills, she wouldn't be any the worse for ware for Pepper's stunt, just caught by surprise by it.)

Mullin eyed the crew of the Nox, taking note of them. They didn't seem like the typical hunter sorts...still, he supposed he didn't really either. They also didn't seem to be especially "nice sorts," and he quirked an eyebrow at his former captain's...well, he hoped it wasn't a joke, but he was pretty sure it was. Oh well. Another crew, another new and hopefully unexciting chapter in his life.

He looked closely at the girl...the blonde one, trying to figure out what she was. Some people stood out to him, burned like candles in his mind's eye, and most of the few folk he'd met that did that weren't exactly what you could call normal. Most likely, this girl would prove to be not normal as well.

He snapped out of his reverie when Luke started moving towards the crew of the Nancy Nox. This was it. Time to make new "friends" and keep on keeping on.

"Yeah, I'm coming," he replied to the other mechanic, turning and giving a half wave of farewell to his old crew before turning back.

As they approached, he noticed one of the crew bidding on a girl, evidently causing some commotion with the rest of the crew. Nice sorts of people didn't bid on girls, and Mullin's hackles rose a bit involuntarily. There had better be a good reason for that, or he was sure this trip was going to be the bad kind of interesting. He approached the table where the Nox's crew sat, eyes drifting subconsciously towards the blonde girl, then flickering back to take in the table at large. Looking back to Luke to make sure the other mechanic was still in it, then spoke up.

"Less I'm mistaken, you're the crew of Nancy Nox?" Less of a question, more of a formality, but something had to be said. He crossed his arms over his chest, not quite an intimidating gesture, but more of one that said he wasn't exactly comfortable about the situation.

"We," he jerked a thumb back to indicate Luke, "were told you might be able to help us out."

"Um, hello," said Roland uncomfortably to the girl who now stood before him. "I, and when I say 'I' I mean we, the crew of my ship here um, welcome you. Listen, you're no one's property to be bought or sold, I was simply getting you out of a bad situation that we may or may not have had a part in."

"You'd be right, and that depends on the kind of help you're looking for. People say a lot of things, whether they're true or not is another matter entirely."

Listen, you're no one's property to be bought or sold, I was simply getting you out of a bad situation that we may or may not have had a part in."

She responded rather defiantly for someone that was nearly sold to a crew of ... who knows what? ... only a minute ago.
"A fine wasta uh money that'll be unless you take me off this moon too."

But when Mullin spoke to the her Captain Savior, she took a slightly demure pose and slunk a step away. The waitress slave spotted Mary then, or recognized her. "you ok?"
Realized she could see, moved closer, "You ok lady?" She nudged her shoulder.

Fedora was looking for more things to sell.

"Oh ya mama lukes, what you got?"

Mr. Freeze reached a list to her. She read. "ore, booze, steel,.... "

"Challenge!" someone shouted.

The room got a little quiet. It was one of the men from Anarchy.

"You even know what that means boy." said a voice from another table (Shatterhand).

"I do. I challenge Miggs of Scarecrow."

There was some laughter and scoffing.

Melody and Belit continued to experiment with their swords off close to the wall.

Melody looked over to Roland with some concern and consternation.

Luke didn't like standing out in a crowd - he preferred to keep to the shadows. So as Mullin took the lead in talking to Roland, Luke was more than happy to stand just a little behind him and to the side. It may have seemed that it was a gesture of having Mullin's back, as Luke stood with his fists clasped together in front of him, doing his best to make his small height seem towering. His legs were planted firmly to the ground, a little apart, and he leaned his head forwards slightly, and titled to the left. He stared intently at Roland, doing all he could to appear intimidating, while trying to ignore his ghost sister.

Adriana Lucy was standing shoulder to shoulder with Luke, her arms folded tightly across her chest. She too was starting at Roland, affronted by the fact he had just bought a young girl as a slave. She had an air of sass about her, but her face and demeanor was just too cute to really pull off a scowl, and Luke was glad that he was the only one who could see her look more like a petulant child than a scary pirate-hunter.

While Roland and Mullin spoke, Luke let his eyes slip away to glance quickly at the other two women at the table with him, and then up towards the stage where Captain Fedora was making a scene. Luke didn't like all the noise going on around them, it made it harder to keep an eye on things and to know if there was any danger.

Luke then looked back at Roland, and spoke in a low voice, "I think what he meant to say was that we could help you." He looked over at Mullin for a moment, a small look of disdain for not doing this properly. Then he turned back to Roland with his intense stare. "We used to crew on the Pellucidar," he added and jerked his head back toward Captain Porter, as if their reputation as pirates and hunters would preceed them.

Roland blinked and gave the girl his best dear-in-headlights look. "Um, listen lady I was simply doing you a good turn. I don't need any stowaways on board my ship, nor do I need any charity cases. You're free, you have a wide open 'Verse to play around in. Do a little introspective soul-searching and find yourself a nice man to raise ten or eleven kids with. I don't exactly offer a free berth to every sob story that comes my way, even if it does come from a pretty lady."

Roland listened to some of the conversations around him. "Bloody hell, I have only a tenuous grasp on what the hell these people are saying." He turned to the girl, "Translate for me. Is there anyone here who I'm honor bound to immediately put a sword into?"

Quote:

Roland sneered and gave a grim laugh, "You don't look like you could help yourself to lunch, kid."

*Is everyone in this entire establishment fucking insane?* Roland thought to himself.

"Look kid, I'm rapidly grasping at straws here trying to understand why you've intruded yourself upon my crew and I. So far I can't speak highly of the service or atmosphere of this place. We come in, minding our own bloody business and just want a drink or two after a long voyage through the Black. Not too much to ask, is it? Next thing I know I'm spending next month's food budget on Miss Congeniality here who has the nerve to ask for passage on my ship after helping me go broke. Not to mention the bad spontaneous flash mob dinner theatre we have being acted out before us now."

"Now, if you expect me to have heard of your ship, I'm sorry I'm just not that well connected. So, is there something you want from us?"

Mullin stiffened a bit at the man's response to Luke. This conversation wasn't going anywhere, and the rapidly escalating...whatever was going on was starting to grate on his nerves.

"Look," he started in, throwing discretion to the wind, "we're hunters, you're hunters. We can help you by, well, we're both mechanics, and both of us have experience and...other skills. You can help us by giving us a berth on your ship."

He was getting more distracted by the goings on at the other side of the room.

"And seriously, what the hell are they doing?" He snapped back to the issue at hand.

"Whaddya say."

He quirked a small, hopefully disarming, yet slightly grim smile, trying to tune out the establishment's excess noise and the vague sensation he was getting from the blonde girl, focusing on the man he was talking to.

Adriana Lucy bristled as Roland made the comment about Luke being unable to help himself to lunch, but Luke ignored it. He was used to people underestimating him, and at this stage he had learned that it could often be an advantage.

"Okay, I was wrong," Adriana Lucy said through gritted teeth. "This guy, totally not hot at all."

Luke laughed to himself, forcing his mouth to stay closed as he tried to suppress the chuckle. Unfortunately, he laughed just as Roland asked what they wanted from him and his crew, which Luke knew would look bad. He tried to salvage his serious look from before as Mullin tried to explain their situation.

Quote:

"And seriously, what the hell are they doing?"

"I think they're starting a fight," Luke answered simply, even though it might have been a rhetorical question. He was getting distracted and annoyed by all the commotion around them too, but he was used to ignoring distractions. A year of being haunted by a dead sibling would do that to a fellow.

Adriana Lucy, as if responding to Luke's thoughts sighed. "You should tell him," she said, clearly unhappy at the situation and Roland's attitude. "The ship's supposed to take on those that need... something, right? Tell him and he'll have to take you."

Luke paled and his jaw clenched. His fists tightened and his eyes lost their intensity, becoming glassy. He needed to get on this ship, but there was no way he was going to admit to this hwoon dahn that he was looking for redemption. So he just kept his mouth shut and hoped Mullin had enough charisma for them both to win the guy over.

Mary sat down next to Roland.

"If I can make a suggestion, I think we should move on," she told him. "I'd like to get to the demon before it realizes we are here.

"Plus I really need to get out of this room,"
she continued. "Too many folks with too much baggage. I overloaded and had to shut down.

"So I am pretty much helpless right now. Once we get to a less populated area, I can reinstate myself and be of some use."

She listened to the two men who came over to inquire about work.

"We do need a mechanic. I could give you a feel for them once we vacate this area."

Roland laughed bitterly. "Hunters you say? You have got to be kidding. Just another fool who laughs at death. The 'Verse has a million of those, never any shortage. We don't need to take on any more ourselves."

Roland was still skeptical, but trusted Mary's intuition. She had a sight that was beyond his ken. In truth, he was growing weary of this place. It was something out of a bad holovid and it gave him an uneasy feeling as well.

"Very well, my colleague seems to vouch for you and she has a very good nose. And we do need someone skilled with machines. Fine, you may travel with us and if you are what you say you are, perhaps we can work something out."

Captain Fedora negotiates the challenge that has been made.
Charlie of Anarchy insists that Miggs of Scarecrow caused insult and injury to one of his crew, this crew member wishes to challenge Miggs to a duel.
Fedora says, "No Mate Charlie. If you Captain wishes to allow a duel, it will not be allowed to be some token crewmate sure to be killed by Miggs. That's not how things be here. We don't allow ya to send your crew ta slaughter."

"If you want to send a crewman agin him, your choice, but you'll have to put up a stake to make it worth the while of Mr. Miggs bein' challenged."

First Mate Charlie seemed eager to do so, but Captain Rossie of Anarchy takes the dishonor of having spoken, and sits Charlie down. "Apologies Captain. We be out of line."

"Tis alright Captain Rossi, you are new to Tortuga. Be not so hasty in the future...

Now, we got deals to be struck?"

Captains make offers and counters for various cargos, moving from table to table.

Melody moves to Roland and the others. "Captain. The demon below. I think is coming... " She looked to a door behind the platform.
"And Captain."

Melody looked up. "Others too, very close. They're coming."

"Here."

If asked...
she replied...

"All of them."

"Here?" asked Mary. "They're all coming here? Now?"

A shudder ran up her spine. Just walking into this place made it neccessary to shut down, she was helpless and a huge liability to her crew. She could try to connect with her powers anyway, but if she took the already oversensitized room and added chaos to it, she wasn't sure she could take it. Instinctively, her left hand slid into her pocket and closed around something.

Her rosary.

It was calming to her. She didn't know why, but she hadn't even thought about it since she received Clare's blood. It was like the blood had separated her from the thing that helped center herself. The thing that kept herself on an even keel.

Prayer.

No wonder she had been so off.

Searching for anyplace she could shut out the din of the crowd, she finally decided to sit under the one end of the table. She knew it looked weird, but didn't really care. Big, bad craziness was about to ensue and she needed to be ready. She sat indian-style on the floor, her staff across her knees and her hands resting softly on the staff.

"I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord," she began.

As she prayed, she started taking down the barriers she constructed when she had first entered the room.
