And besides, if there's a passage in that thing that's good enough to help in this situation, I'll eat the thing with maple syrup."

Pepper was right, Roland's book wasn't as badly damaged as he thought. He picked it up and, aside from some singing, it was serviceable.

"The passage!" said Roland, suddenly struck by the seemingly greatest of ideas. "Binding, binding binding binding," he said, slinging the shotgun over his back and thumbing through the book's index.

Quote:

"It's leading us... there are ... others waiting for us above."

"Why is it always the ruttin' sword leading us somewhere? Maybe it should be the captain since it obviously knows where we're going better than I do. "

The hurried along with the others while thumbing through the book while trying to clench a blade in his hand.

"Brimstone, Baphomet, Beowulf...Beowulf? Hang on a sec," he said as he leapt over to where Mullin went down and ran his attacker through the heart with his blade.

"Damnation, why the hell did they put Binding under Charms and Incantations?"

He saw one of the new people's hands go on Mary. "Mary, you should know better than to go off on your own. You have powers of sight, but not of the visual variety. Stay close to one of us...well, maybe not Pepper. You could be walking into the tip of a blade for all you know. You're our sixth sense, and I'd rather you stay alive just a bit longer."

"Eurika!" he said triumphantly. "Chapter 9, So You Want to Bind the Devil? There's an incantation here that's supposed to bind the powers of darkness long enough for them to be communicative. I can't guarantee it'll work, after all I ordered this book from a Cortex auction. But hey, it's worth a shot. Pepper doesn't want us to cast the demon to its home plane too soon, after all."

Pepper nodded to Melody, scowled at the new comers, glared at Mary and stopped in her tracks as the Captain found the passage he'd been looking for.

"What? It really does have something useful? Holy crap." Then she grinned. "Well, guess the fact that it's useful means I can't eat it cause then it wouldn't be useful anymore and I wouldn't have to eat it." She left that for whoever wanted to figure what they wanted from it and went back to focusing on where the Demons were.

"Right, so we've got a binding spell, and yeah, I want a little chat time with one of them. And I will be very upset if they all die before that chat. So how do we get to them, and as I'm gonna guess there's no spell invented ever that's strong enough to bond all of them at once, how do we get one alone long enough to bind it?"

She looked at the man holding the precious binding spell in hand, but was really speaking to everyone. She'd take ideas from anyone at this point. Even Mary.

As she waited for an answer, she looked at the exits around them. The main one was blocked, but the others didn't look very fire proof to her. Alright, so she could get them through the door, then what?

Luke was not an ideas man. He was more of an act and react kind of guy and do all the thinking part later. Usually much later.

So when it came to making a plan, Luke kept his mouth shut. When they entered the office, he took a wander around, picking up the odd item, reading a paper here and there. He wasn't consciously looking for anything, it was a mixture of idleness and mild curiosity. And though he might have looked like he wasn't paying attention, he was still listening closely to the discussions.

He chuckled as Pepper gave her logical reason for not eating Roland's book, and looked over at her with a grin.

His sister appeared sitting on top of the filing cabinet. "Head in the game," she reprimanded him, but with a teasing grin.

Luke's head snapped around to look over at his sister, at a point just above the filing cabinet, and scowled.

"Uh, lots of shooting?" Luke suggested, partly in jest, but to be honest, it seemed the best option to him.

Luke found papers on and in the desk. Lists of the ships and crew and manifests. Interesting stuff, though not much help at the moment. Some photos of some very compromised folk, a couple pics of dead bodies that seemed to probably be some sort of 'proof of death', a pentacle, a couple hundred credits, a pack of gum, handcuffs with a key, lots of pens and pencils and loose paper, one of those infuriating wooden puzzle rotating games which was busted in two, and a frog.

Mary still held the sword. It was all she could see. And feel. She moved it out in front of her along the north wall. It was as though the sword moved, pulled just a little, up... and another spot.. up... and another... up... Up and in front of her (point north) at 11, 12, 1 and 2 o'clock. It was almost like she feel footsteps, coming...

closer.

Melody touched Mary's arm and guided her back to about the center of the room, still facing north. "Do you . . ?" but she stopped herself. The sword has some power in Mary's hands, though the disadvantages of not seeing naught else. Melody wasn't one to trifle with powers that others couldn't see.

Melody then looked around at the others. "Uh, not too worry, they be comin' to us." She pointed with the Sword of Seamus. Four directions. The four doors. And then looked over at the door to the kitchen, as though she still suspected more. Even though all doors behind them had been sealed.

Annabelle and Lisabelle huddled over behind the desk. They both had very nice big semi-automatics and extra clips, "Who are yooze guys?"

Luke rifled through some of the papers, but passed over them quickly, finding the risqué photos much more interesting. He picked up the small stack of pictures and began looking through them with a somewhat seedy grin, chuckling at the compromising positions. Adriana Lucy glanced over his shoulder, before turning quickly away. "Eww, gross." Luke laughed, a throaty chuckle.

When he came to a picture of a lifeless and bloody corpse, he peered at it for a second before jumping suddenly as he realised exactly what he was looking at. He threw the photos away from him as if they had suddenly become red hot. Shivering a little then with disgust, he noticed the creds, and his grin returned. He cast a quick glance at the others, hoping they hadn't noticed the stash, and quickly stuffed it into his jeans pocket. He took a stick of gum too, popping it into his mouth. He idly picked up the handcuffs, sticking the key in his pocket as well, and began spinning one cuff around and around on his index finger.

He followed the point of Melody's sword to where it was pointing, turning about the room as if without a care in the world. Four doors and eight of them, seemed like pretty good odds. And tipping over the big office table would help add some cover, plus a quick escape back to the kitchen if they got into trouble.

Luke gave a quick nod in acknowledgment of the two women, his gum snapping obnoxiously as he chewed and the handcuff still spinning around his finger. He let one of the ship's regulars do the proper introductions, but he couldn't help commenting on their weaponry. "Nice equipment. Reckon the three of us can do some damage while Captain over there does his fancy pants binding thing."

It was like the sword was taking over. She could see nothing but the sword but now she could feel the sword. It tugged her body, distinctly showing her four points that Melody confirmed as being where the demons would be coming.

In addition, she could feel their presence getting closer and closer.

She just plain felt funny. Like the sword was gaining more and more control over her. She knew that in her present state, she'd be useless to the crew, so anything had to be better than that.

So she gave in and let it envelop her. So much power...

She wondered if Melody felt like this.

"Hang on," said Roland studying the book intently. "Ok, we need a few items. Wine, tea, diet cola or other ritual drink. Awide, shallow bowl with salt or some other dry (edible) seasoning. A silver ring. Hang on, I have one here on my finger. I think we have all of that here."

"There's a passage here. Spirits of the Seven Winds, circle thee now this sacred bowl. Draw forth from the legions of thy strength a noble soldier, able in the art of war and deception and predisposed with cunning and trickery. A daemon of a mischievous turn hath settled in its way and great harm doth it seek to incur. Spirits of the Seven Winds draw forth from thy legions this single spirit. Send it to its task that thy commandments it may keep under the fear of retribution and disfavor in thine eyes. Let thy servant soldier do thy bidding at mine behest that this daemon be bound in this stone to time eternal and thereby meddle no more. Spirits of the Seven Winds, as this I ask, so therefore, let it be so."

"Oh, there's one last bit. These words must be spoken by a virgin."

Roland looked around and shrugged. "Um, does anyone in this room fit that description?"

"Um, does anyone in this room fit that description?"

Mary spoke up.

"I am," she said confidently. She wasn't ashamed of it. She just didn't have the opportunity to have such a relationship. She grew up in a convent after all. "But I can't read your book. It's not in braille."

And her sword shone brighter.

An unnatural quiet ensued. The air turned cold. Even those without a supernatural sense could feel the presence behind the doors.

Lisa spoke up, meekly, as she raised her hand. "er, I am.. Well technically I ain't never, with a guy... done anything."
She looked at her fellow Captain Anna, who answered, "Well, there's not done anything and everything but..." She shrugged and looked at Roland.
The two women were clueless as to if that would help. They had big 50 cal semi-automatics though.

As the final incantation gets spoke, the doors explode off their bolt like hinges and the four demons entered. Human form adulterated through supernatural means and more. Dark inner forms having been brought to the surface, an experiment in possession and demonic ectoplasm transmogrification... or something like that. Where's Barto Columbo when you need him to explain this shit?

( ok, worky together... have fun, go slow....
... the incantation will work... a little... not bad for store bought? )
( the swords do cause horrible damage to them, but Mary can't see anything but the sword and the demons, 'watch out for that ... ' crash 'nevermind'
Big bullets do slow them, hurt them some, but they are brutes.... getting the two swords into them deep through the chest, or beheading will do the trick.. with a little trial and error )

Melody didn't wait, she attacked the front creature. Swords clashed, she ducked low and cut through an ankle, a second demon advanced just as fast. Melody barely parried in time as the inhuman beast kicked out at her hard, sprawling her into the table. The edge of it hitting her collar bone. A break, the snap heard, the sword of Seamus left her grip.

"Oh, there's one last bit. These words must be spoken by a virgin."

Luke brought the spinning handcuff to a sudden stop, and his breath caught in his throat like a cough. Grinning, he looked around the room at the girls, wondering which of them might be. Surprised by the answers, he slipped the cuffs into his back pocket, and readied himself as the incantation was spoke.

"Holy..." Luke was momentarily frozen as the doors blew and the demons entered, the one coming from the workers' door already uncomfortably close. He glanced sideways at his invisible ghost-sister, his voice rising as the demon got closer. "They don't look human anymore. I can shoot these ones, right?"

"Yes!" Adriana Lucy screamed in reply.

The demon raised his sword to attack Luke, Luke fired his shotgun. The rock salt burst forth furiously. The demon's stride faltered, Luke fired again. It seemed to make the demon angry, but it wasn't stopping. Either it was much too strong and powerful to be hurt by salt, or its armour-type thing was protecting it.

Luke barely had time to contemplate this as the sword came swooshing down towards his neck. He ducked his head forward in a fast, low bow, and then sprang upwards, smashing the butt of the sawed-off shotgun into the demon's chin. It was a powerful blow, or so Luke thought. The demon however, didn't agree. Too close now for the demon to use his sword, Luke was sure he saw the creature smile as he gripped Luke around the throat, lifting him clear off the ground. Luke struggled for breath, kicking out with his legs and trying in vain to smash the demon in the face. Just before the lights went out, the demon tossed him away, sending Luke flying backwards until he crashed onto the large table.

"Okay," Luke stammered, somehow keeping his joking tone. "That hurt."

"Um, that's quite alright. Thanks for the offer, but thankfully we have someone who's right up the ally. Mary, I can dictate to you and you can just repeat after me."

Roland hastily went to the kitchen and prepared the bowl, put the ritual ingredients in and handed it to Mary.

"Put both hands on the bowl like this. Better reception than way, or so that book says."

The door burst in and dark forms entered.

"Looks like we'll have to dispense with the practice run through Mary. Repeat after me...Spirits of the Seven Winds, circle thee now this sacred bowl..."

Mary took hold of the bowl when it touched her hand, but couldn't put it in both hands. The other was holding the sword. She could feel the demons way too close for her liking and she didn't want to put down the closest thing she had to defend herself with if things went horribly wrong. So she wrapped her arm around the outside of the bowl like a child holding a teddy bear.

"Repeat after me...Spirits of the Seven Winds, circle thee now this sacred bowl..."

"Spirits of the Seven Winds, circle thee now this sacred bowl," Mary started. But she could feel it. One of the demons was coming right at her. "You better hurry up, Roland!"

Roland paused and fired a slug at the approaching demon at point-blank range. The beast howled, it's face and head shattered by the blast. Black ichor sprayed all around, giving Mary a good faceful. Screams turned to laughter as a swarm of black bloated flies erupted from the demons head, coalescing into a dark nearly-solid mass above the demon.

Each fly bore a face that resembled Roland's, yet twisted and grotesque. They shouted unison, their voices horrific and unreal. "YOU WILL NEVER BIND US! YOU'LL DIE FIRST! JOIN WITH US, WE HAVE AN ETERNITY TO GNAW YOUR FLESH!"

With great urgency, Roland recited the book's passage.

"Draw forth from the legions of thy strength a noble soldier, able in the art of war and deception and predisposed with cunning and trickery. A daemon of a mischievous turn hath settled in its way and great harm doth it seek to incur...."

Roland discarded the shotgun and drew his sword, standing in front of Mary. The swarm struck out with lethal force at Roland has he dodged and sliced the swarm deeply with his blade. So tightly-packed were the flies that their mass was a nearly-solid whole. Roland's blade cut into them and more foul black fluid burst forth. The swarm cried in unison.

"...Spirits of the Seven Winds draw forth from thy legions this single spirit. Send it to its task that thy commandments it may keep under the fear of retribution and disfavor in thine eyes. Let thy servant soldier do thy bidding at mine behest that this daemon be bound in this stone to time eternal and thereby meddle no more. When the black ichor hit her face, she swayed a bit, almost dropping the bowl. It reeked. So much that it made her a little lightheaded, but she wiped it quickly away with the sleeve of her arm. Luckily she hadn't dropped the bowl.

"YOU WILL NEVER BIND US! YOU'LL DIE FIRST! JOIN WITH US, WE HAVE AN ETERNITY TO GNAW YOUR FLESH!"

Mary felt the point of the sword come up towards the demon, as if it was challenging it.

This can't be good, Mary thought.

"Draw forth from the legions of thy strength a noble soldier, able in the art of war and deception and predisposed with cunning and trickery. A daemon of a mischievous turn hath settled in its way and great harm doth it seek to incur...."

"Draw forth from the legions of thy strength a noble soldier... able in the art of war and deception and... predisposed with cunning and trickery," Mary repeated, hoping she was getting the words right. "A daemon of a mischievous turn hath settled... in its way and great harm... doth it seek to incur...."

"Spirits of the Seven Winds draw forth from thy..." Mary started. The incantation was a nightmare to remember. "Gorram it Roland! Can you slow down?"

Then she felt another presence. One of the other demons had circled around and was now rushing at her and Roland from the right.

"Roland?!" she tried to warn, but it was too late.
