Anna and Lisa were suddenly there, right next to Luke and the Demon that had just smashed him against the wall. They were unloading their pistols with spead and what seemed to be a steady calm. The demon jerked and his human body began to be torn to bits. The faces of Anna and Lisa showed fear, with enough bravery to keep replacing clips and shooting.

The demon near Melody jumped at her, somehow her instincts deflected her enemy's sword, but they were forced onto the table. The legs buckled and it crashed to the floor; arms held swords away from each other as both struggled to bring the end to the other. With what seemed to be nearly mirrored moved, they both turned and twisted their sword arms and plunged a sword into the side of the other. The demon shrieked. Black smoke erupted from the wound, glowed red and then turned to dead gray ash. The body of the grotesque creature collapsed on Melody. He own sword tumbled from her hand and landed on the floor near Mullin.

Roland's fight against malformed demon host, black goo and flies went as well as such a battle could. He finished passing on the incantation to Mary, but was engulfed in all manner of demonic elements: buzzing, biting, cutting. While there was no significant wound being struck, the sound and fury of the bizarre attack could drive someone insane.

Mary continued with the incantation.

Pepper began a single focus on a demon form before here. One confinement off all her concentration. The demon burned and smoked as flesh melted and muscle burned. The demon within seemed unable to escape, trapped by the fire. Yet something burrowed into Pepper's soul, fought with her concentration for her to break away, demanded she relent. She did not.

Roland grabbed Mary by the wrist and dragged her roughly away from the swarm. He nearly buckled at the stench given off by the demonic entity. It was the foul smell of death that he knew from a thousand battles, but it was somehow concentrated and more potent than any he had encountered in his lifetimes. It was death combined with disease and decay.

Drawing his sword he moved to protect Mary.

"Mary! This isn't going well! Finish the bloody incant..." Roland was cut off as the swarm hit him with full force, knocking him into the oppossing wall.

The book flew from his hand to the floor nearby.

As Roland struggled to free himself, the swarm cut deeply into his flesh as he sunk his blade deeply into the mass of corruption. He suddenly felt he couldn't breath and knew that the swarm was trying to crush the life out of him.

"Mary! This isn't going well! Finish the bloody incant..."

Then Roland's voice was abruptly cut off. Mary could hear him hit the nearby wall and something hitting the ground.

"I can't finish the incantation!" she exclaimed. "I can't remember it all!"

But before she could do anything else, the sword literally pulled her in Roland's direction. All Mary could do was hold on for dear life. Of the sword and of the powdered concoction Roland had made to bind the demons once the incantation.

Luke

Luke's pride was hurt by the show of competency by the women Anna and Lisa, but it was nothing compared to what the demon might have done to him, so he was just glad they were there. He picked himself up from where he had landed, leaning against the wall. He was about to reload his shotgun with iron pellets this time, when he noticed Roland and Mary struggling at the other side of the room with the swarm of demonic flies.

Luke reacted immediately, hurriedly reloading two more rock-salt cartridges. He sprinted around the room, having to be careful not to get in the way of Anna, Lisa or Pepper as he made his way to Roland and Mary. The salt hadn't seemed to do much damage to the demon in the human form with all its armour, but in this form, Luke hoped for the best. He also really hoped his new Captain didn't get too mad at him for shooting him. It was only rock salt after all...

Luke fired the first shot well above Roland's head, hoping the spray of salt would help to disperse the flies. The few demon flies that were hit by the salt seemed to react, but it wasn't enough to calm the swarm. Seeing no other option, Luke struck out his arm and pointed into the middle of the swarm. As he fired the salt shot he turned his face away, screwed up his face and looked out only from the corner of his eye, as if he really didn't want to see the result. He'd never actually shot a human with rock salt before, but he figured it wouldn't do Roland any real harm. At least, it probably wouldn't kill him.

Whether it worked or not, he dropped the now-empty shotgun and grabbed the book. He shouted out the incantation, then looked up expectantly with a hero's grin, not realising he was supposed to have had his hands in the mystic gooey thing.

Luke's first shot sends a hole in the swarm tiny bits of some kind of gooey smoking matter splatter on to the floor. But it seems just a dent in the swarm.

The thousand bites, the tiny creatures flying into every crack and orifice, or the stench of something dead and rotten; Roland was about to lose what control he had left. Flailing at the demon composed creatures he suddenly felt a very different pain as a blast of shotgunned rock salt hit him across the arm and back. It sent him flailing in a new direction and the buzzing around him suddenly reconfigured.

Someone else is in the room then, a blur it seemed to Luke. She handed him another book, "Try this, no witchy components. Just read." It was a small book, red leather, opened already, the short exorcism was in red lettering. Clare Susan (formerly of Nancy Nox) then stood in front of the demonic swarm and started clawing at them.

Quote:

Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus, omnis satanica potestas, omnis incursio infernalis adversarii, omnis legio, et secta diabolica,
Ergo draco maledicte et sectio
Ergo draco maledicte et legio secta diabolica
Ut Ecclésiam tuam secúra tibi fácias servire libertáte, te rogámus, audi nos.

In the middle of it Mary waved a sword and spilled magical components about the area, mostly onto Roland. The sword seemed to attack the creatures, the buzzing began to stop; the demonic things flew to the sword and like a shimmering bug zapper fried their little demonic bits to whatever is on the other side of hell for demonic thingies.

The burning demon in front of Pepper waved burning hands and tossed Pepper back against the far wall. It's burning form turned toward Roland and Mary and Clare Susan, who now had smoldering ash and demon/human/fly goo on them. The Sword in Mary's hand had dissipated and killed the demon of the flies.

Melody on the busted table barely moved, but the demon in the grotesque once human form did not move. It lay across her dead.

Annabelle, Lisabelle and Mullin fought the fourth. Mullin made a try for Melody's dropped sword. The demon cut him down with a sword stroke on his leg, Lisabelle and Annabelle reloaded. The demon leaped at them. They screamed and jumped in opposite directions.

When Luke had looked up from reading Roland's incantation he had half expected to see the other crew members smiling and congratulating him, with the demons gone up in smoke. When he realised that wasn't the scene in front of him, he quickly figured he must have done something wrong. Hastily flicking through the pages for an explanation, he remembered that Roland had asked for a virgin to read it, and Luke's eyes went wide and his cheeks flushed. Suddenly the demon attack wasn't so important anymore, his only concern was that the others would think....

"I forgot... Ha, I'm not..." he began to explain, but of course the others were a bit too busy to listen.

Then there was a blur and there was another book in his hands. For a moment he wondered should he really trust this... entity and read what she had given him. But as she began to claw at the demonic flies, he figured she was probably on their side... He looked down at the book and not understanding a word of what he was saying, he simply pronounced each word as it was written, and hoped for the best.

Halfway through reading things started to happen, and the blind woman's sword started zapping at the flies. Luke paused long enough to think it was neat, then hurried to finish reading, seeing the burning demon turn towards them. He was painfully aware that he had foolishly dropped his shotgun.

Mary could hear them. Buzzing flies or insects or something buzzing. She followed the sword, letting it's power flow through her, not trying to fight against it.

She heard the shotgun blast and flinched, but it didn't stop the sword. Unwavering, it went towards the demon, it jerked her a little when it got closer and she spilled the bowl. Her heart fell. What were they to do now?

She felt the sword raise up and wave around then the sound of the buzzing slowly dissipated. She didn't know what was happening and it was a little disconcerting.

Then the sword whirled her around and toward something else. She could feel the heat of whatever she was near as the sword did it's thing there too. But she wasn't sure what it was going after or... who. But she knew who had the power to heat like that.

Please don't be Pepper...

Then the heat dissipated as well.

"Is it working?" she asked aloud. "Did it kill the right thing? What's going on?"

Luke felt himself turned, by some force. Was it the book? Or was it Adriana Lucy? In either case, he face the last of the four demons, the one that had the two women back up against the west door. About to kill them when Luke finished the incantation. The exorcism. The demon smoke flew from the creatures mouth and fled through unseen supernatural cracks in the ceiling. It was not destroyed like the others, but it was gone.

A sudden stillness came to the room.

Clare held Mary's hands, even as one held the sword. "It's fine now." Bare flesh of human and vampire touched. Mary could feel the inside of Clare, again.
But she was different. Clare pulled Mary close, "You've got my blood, but it's not the same." She smelled Mary's neck, Mary felt the Vampiric desire barrel through her; the thirst of one that has not drank in days, the hunger that one has after many days, the sexual desire of a lover at the heights of passion. It was irresistible. Yet Clare pushed back a few inches. It was then that Mary could smelled her breath: of dried blood and raw eaten flesh. "Someday.... when we meet again... " Clare's voice sounded so sweet, then there was a gurgling in her throat, her voice changed to a growl, "don't you touch him."

And then the release. Mary returned to the room, the hunger and thirst of the moment passed quickly.

"Barto wanted you to have the book. And a little help." She turned to Roland, "You may have to come for us some day. Don't bring the bargain bin books." She laughed liked she was dangling him from a string, "We have to be going, ship to catch." She bounded out of the room at twice, thrice the speed of a human.

Pepper was slouched at the back of the room, half broken. Melody was badly injured as well. Both tried to rise, to continue the pursuit.

Lisabelle and Annabelle hugged and kissed and crawled over to the dead body of Mullin. They looked up, pained expressions, fear still running through them as they had never seen such sights.

Adriana Lucy was near Luke, she seemed shaken as well. Roland stood close by them, fly goo and ectoplasm and human remains splotched on him.
The dead demons and hosts were scattered about. One killed by exorcism, one by Melody's sword, and one by the sword that Mary held. The fourth was not certain, either Pepper's fire or Mary's sword.

Three killed eternal, one exorcised to plague humanity some other day.

Luke stood, astounded by the scene of carnage around him. It took him a few moments to do anything other than stare. He was aware of Adriana Lucy beside him, he could feel her presence shaken as he was. For a moment, he wanted nothing more than to reach out and take her hand, offer some comfort, but of course he couldn't.

"Help them," she told him, nodding her head towards the fallen.

Luke didn't really know what to do though, as much as he wanted to help. He closed the red book, taking care of this one. It felt important, he had felt its power. He picked up his shotgun, then moved over to where Melody was trapped beneath the dead demon. Laying the book and gun down carefully, he began to try and heave the dead demon off her. If she needed it, he would take off his t-shirt to put pressure on her wound to stop the bleeding.

"Hey," he greeted her, with a carefree grin as if everything was fine. "How you doing?" He figured medics always liked to try and keep their patients talking. "I'm Luke. You crew on the Nox? I just joined, one hell of an introduction."

"A bit more information than we required, but good on ya," muttered Roland as he got up with a mess of slime over him. He tried his best to rub the corruption off of him, but noticed that it was beginning to dissolve as the foul energies that bound the demon to this universe faded.

Roland looked legitimately hurt. He glared at Clare and hissed, "I ordered it off the fucking Cortex. Care to lord a bit more about what a proletariat I am before taking your leave?"

"Stupid fucking cunt," he hissed as she left.

"Roland," he said extending his hand. "You fought bravely. I normally hate all forms of human life but you I hate just a bit less than most. And who is your lady...er...." Roland noticed a brief outline of a human female form that dissipated as soon as he noticed it.

"Never mind," he said curtly. "Maybe we should get the fuck out of here and continue this discussion someplace a bit less infested by the forces of darkness."

Luke didn't take Roland's hand, only looked up at him with a confused expression. He couldn't understand why the Captain was talking to him while his crew lay sprawled around and possibly dieing. Luke shrugged at the comment that he had fought bravely, and his brow furrowed even more confused by the statement that Roland hated all forms of human life. So what was Roland then?

Everything Roland said seemed to go over Luke's head, so he tried to just focus on helping the woman named Melody. Luke inclined his head over towards where Pepper was slumped, drawing Roland's attention to her. "Is she okay?" Luke clearly meant that he thought Roland should find out, and help her. "Do you have a doctor, or a medic?"

He glanced over at Anna and Lisa - perhaps their crew would have a doctor that could help if the Nox didn't. As he looked over at the two women, Luke couldn't help his gaze lingering for a moment on the motionless body of Mullin. Luke had seen him go down earlier out of the corner of his eye, and he knew now that he would not be getting up. Luke hadn't known the man that well, but they had worked together and it was a surreal feeling to think he was dead. But Luke shook his head; while there were injured to be taken care of the dead had to take their place in the back of his mind.

Clare held Mary's hands, even as one held the sword. Her touch was different than when Mary had done the calming with her before. They were colder and it seemed much darker. It was oddly disgusting but fascinating at the same time.

"It's fine now."

Clare pulled Mary close.

"You've got my blood, but it's not the same."

Clare was very close to her neck. Mary could feel the rush of emotion that stemmed from that closeness. Mary felt hunger, intense hunger and desire, as well as the need to consummate... something. She tilted her head aside just a tiny bit, her body wanting... needing... But Clare pushed away and the smell of her breath made Mary think about what she was feeling, but the desire, a passionate sexual desire still lingered.

"Someday.... when we meet again... Don't you touch him."

Mary knew exactly who Clare was warning her away from. She could... feel him nearby. Barto. It took everything she had not to run to him and offer herself to him. Then Clare was just gone.

Mary shook her head as it cleared and looked around. The demons were no longer there. Her blind sight had returned. There was wounded. One of the new people was dead. Pepper wasn't doing well. But Melody... Melody was injured badly, but still trying to get up and pursue what they had not killed. If she kept that up, Melody would most certainly die. Mary raced to Melody's side and set the sword down.

"Melody, you have to be still," Mary whispered to her and when she wouldn't, Mary was left with no choice. She laid her hands along Melody's face and neck. "This won't hurt, I promise."

Mary closed her eyes as she let the calm flow from her into Melody. Melody became less agitated as Mary helped her. Then Mary pulled it all back and she saw everything. Melody's family history and the generations on generations that wielded the sword. Their trials and tribulations. All the times they twarted evil creatures. It was impressive. Once Melody was clamed enough that it would give her a fighting chance, she looked over at Luke, the new guy. But she paid no attention to him. She focused on the girl standing next to him.

"What's your name?" Mary asked.

But then the reality of the labor being over distracted her. Pain coursed through her head as she sat down on the floor and her hands flew to her temples in an effort to stop it from feeling like it was going to explode.

Annabelle and Lisa belle answer in the negative, or partially so. 'yes' they have a medic, but calling for him...asking crew to come walk in on...

"What is all this and who are you people?" And then as if on cue, their crew rolled into the room. A dozen teens and twentysomethings like off of the beatnik runaway crowd of newer Soho in Londinium. Some sort of Ancient Bohemian or at least some kind of guided attempt at the look. Except for the packing heat like a gang of Tong.

Hugs and kisses to their Co-Captains, much love and threatening looks at the others until Anna and Lisa gave them the thumbs up. Then it was first aid kits, grog and energy bars. They electrified the room with a bizarre energy. Melody and Pepper were carried by them, Annabelle helped Mary, while the rest of the crew led the way up.

Mary found an odd calmness to the woman. A settling fear from their situation, a mature understanding of the life she led; a love for her insane crew and lover co-captain. A powerful desire to protect it and gorram the rest of the verse, it was there to plunder as they felt the urge.

The entered into the larger Villagio courtyard. A couple of buildings burned. Dozens of people meandered around, looking for dead or living crew. The dead included alliance soldiers and those known as Reavers with their twisted horrific bodies.

The voice of an irritated Janet Jameson, "... in, what is your position?" It was a recorded loop, "This is Nancy Nox. Any crew, call in, what is your position?"

Luke couldn't understand it, and to be honest, he was getting a little annoyed. There were now three people looking over Melody, and no-one had gone to see to Pepper. When Mary took hold of Melody, Luke just shook his head, said nothing, and dashed over to where Pepper was struggling to get up.

"Hey, let me help," he said to her as he reached out to help her up. He gave her a little half-grin, almost expecting her to protest his help since she seemed like the kind of woman that liked to take care of herself. When his hand touched her skin, he felt a sudden shock. Not quite like an electrical shock, though it was definitely a shock of power. And as their skin met, steam began to rise and his hands felt instantly warmer. It wasn't that her skin felt warm, no, touching her made his own hands warmer.

He quickly withdrew his hands from Pepper, a look of confusion and a touch of fear on his face. Mary looked over at him then, but didn't speak to him. For a second he thought she could see Adriana Lucy, the way she seemed to look directly where his sister was standing. But then he rationalized that she must have meant Pepper, so one of them must also be new to the Nox, or they both were.

But Luke didn't get to ask Mary about it, as she seemed to become overwhelmed and took a seat on the floor. And then the other crew arrived, and with them came help. Not sure he should touch Pepper again, he left the other crew to carry her. He made sure someone took care of Mullin's body too, though he couldn't quite bring himself to look at the dead face of his old crew member.

Luke retrieved his shotgun and the red book, stuffing them both into his duffel and slinging that over his shoulder. Then he picked up his guitar case and leather jacket with his other hand, and followed Roland out of the hall.

The scene outside horrified Luke, and he looked around in stunned silence. The sight of the dead reavers made his mind boggle and his stomach heave - he had to stop and drop his stuff for a moment, bending over and breathing deeply so as not to throw up. He coughed a few times, but managed to keep the bile from rising past his throat. He straightened, wiped his damp eyes with a finger and thumb, then picked up his stuff and kept going. After all, what other choice was there?

"We get along quite well with the healing arts we possess," replied Roland casually. "If one of our own still has life in them we can usually bring them back to fighting shape in short time, so you needn't be so concerned."

"Not all healing is of the traditional sort possessed by doctors, after all. If any here require healing then we would be happy to..."

Quote:

"What's your name?" Mary asked.

Roland stared at Mary puzzled. He tried to ascertain what it was she was talking to. He thought for a moment that her senses had left her.

"Mary sees quite a bit that others do not. I have come to respect her vision and rely on it."

"This is the captain, we are in the courtyard near the south end of town. There's been some sort of battle here. Reavers and Alliance both. It appears to have been a hit and fade attack, the Reavers didn't stay long enough to burn the entire town to cinders. Do you track any Reaver ships on scanner?"

Roland was no stranger to battles. Being the veteran of scores of wars throughout the centuries, from ancient battles in Medieval Europe and the Middle East to humanity's third and final World War where nanoweapons decimated entire populations and genetically-enhanced troops were controlled by drugs, he'd seen it all. There was still something about Reaver efficiency that made his blood run cold.

"This can't have been a coincidence, our presence here and the demons. Something attracted the Reavers here, as far as I know Reavers don't come this far into Rim territory."
