Ian smiled at his new captain as he gave him a weapon back. He nodded as he added a thought of his own

"Take care of Ryder for me then. I'll be wantin her back. It was the same pistol I gave to Sergei a while back. She'll help you as best as she can."

He holstered Ghost on his left hip, though the pistols looked and felt alike, he could always tell them apart.

For now, he was part of a family again.

Service Tunnels

Ari went towards the noises from the fighting that was ongoing. She didn't know if Darren was following, but she just knew she had to get to Sergei. Major Harrington was like his brother in size and she knew it had been a while since Sergei had faced an opponent that close to his size. It wasn't that she was doubting Sergei's ability, she just didn't want to take a chance that the man could get in a lucky blow.

Silently, like the thief she was, she made it through the service tunnels until she came across Amber, who sat around the corner from where the fight was taking place. Her hands were over her mouth and Ari could tell that she was afraid for Sergei, but was at a disadvantage since she had been injured.

Ari squeezed her shoulder in reassurance and then held up her index finger to her lips.

"Sshhh..." she vocalized ever so softly before smiling sadly and making her way down the vent towards the compartment right behind where the fight was going on.

She couldn't afford to drop down in the middle of the fray. She needed some space. Instead she dropped out onto the corridor just 20 feet behind them. Just as she arrived the major got in such a lucky shot she dreaded; a kick to the head that sent Sergei stumbling back, shaking his head somewhat, trying to clear the confusion that had suddenly crept in.

The major started to advance and she knew what she had to do.

"My blade slipped inside your brother like butter, you know that?" she said quite clearly, but without any need to raise her voice. "He was so surprised it had happened as he had me pinned to the prep table while he raped me... again."

Major Harrington whirled on her, staring at her with slight surprise as he wiped the blood away from his eye. He blinked a couple of times like he thought she was a specter there to torment him.

"I bet he never expected one of his victims to fight back, after all, he had size and a cruel disposition for an advantage," she continued. "But my friend that you are fighting so well with, well he taught me many things, which included the keeping of a blade in my boot, as well as the method of using one in close quarters."

She looked past the Major and assessed Sergei's well being. He was getting better and regaining his balance, but not quite there yet. He wasn't ready to jump back into the fray.

She looked back at the Major, whose features were twisting in anger.

"His eyes went wide as I plunged the blade between his ribs and then he was completely surprised when I managed to twist it and then shove it upwards, slicing up as many vital organs as I could," she said as her voice became stronger and more steely. "I watched the light fade from his eyes."

The Major advanced on her quicker than she expected. The next thing he knew was that he had her held against the wall, her feet dangling in the air and his forearm pressed across her chest, making breathing difficult.

"I was... never so... glad..." she rasped.

He leaned forward with eyes that showed so much pain.

"He was a good man," he insisted. "He was my brother and a decorated soldier. He was a good man!"

"He... was... a... rapist."

Black spots started dancing in her line of vision. She knew that her life was so close to ending. A little slip upwards and the man would crush her windpipe. She didn't fight him though. She almost welcomed it. She was just so tired and she wanted her crewmates to have a chance to be free of this place. She figured that if her death got the job done, then it was worth it.

She could hear her heart slow, her eyes fluttered closed and her head fall forward as she lost consciousness.

All of a sudden, she was in a white room and her mother stood before her.

"Momma?" she said in disbelief. "Is it over?"

Her mother hugged her fiercely then backed away.

"You're here too soon," she was told as her mother backed away. "You need to go back."

"No... I can't..." she said as tears fell down her face. "I won't! I want to stay here... With you!"

"Go back..."

"NO!"

She wanted to stay and she then knew that all she had to do was stay still and let the Major finish the job.

The Corridor During the Fight

Sergei knew it was coming, but wasn't fast enough to avoid it.

When the Major's boot connected with his temple, he saw stars and his vision grayed out as he fell flat on his back. He shook his head, trying to clear the cobwebs that crowded his brain.

He was waiting for the blow to finish it off, but it never came. Instead he heard voices.

"My blade slipped inside your brother like butter, you know that?"

He knew that voice...

His vision grayed out again as he rolled over and attempted to push himself up to his knees. He didn't know how long he kneeled there on his hands and feet, but he became aware of more talking.

"I watched the light fade from his eyes."

Ari? Was that Ari?

"He was a good man," "He was my brother and a decorated soldier. He was a good man!"

What was the girl doing? Did she have a death wish?

"He... was... a... rapist."

Sergei shook his head some more as he got to one knee. He lifted his head after who knows how long, just in time to see Ari's head fall forward and the grayish cast to her skin.

He was still weak. But he had to do something. He touched his comm.

"Capt'n? Darren? Need help... He's killing Ari."

Hopefully someone will hear him. He took a deep breath and heard a scream erupt out of his mouth as he shoved himself onto his feet and launched himself at the Major.

They collided as Sergei managed to get an arm on the man's throat, wrap his legs around his body and squeeze. His strength was fading fast, but as he looked over at her unmoving body, he hoped that Darren or Reno or someone was nearby.

He wouldn't last long, but maybe long enough.

Darren wasn't answering him and Reno hoped that the man hadn't gotten himself dead. Or any other person on his crew.

He looked over at Ian, anxious for the door to open, plus wondering about his crew.

"Take care of Ryder for me then. I'll be wantin her back. It was the same pistol I gave to Sergei a while back. She'll help you as best as she can."

Reno nodded grimly as he started to get a bad feeling. He began to pace a little, pinching the bridge of his nose. He wanted to get a snarky retort to Ian, but couldn't muster the snark to do it well.

His blood chilled as he heard Sergei over the comm.

"Capt'n? Darren? Need help... He's killing Ari."

God... Sergei sounded so weak... Reno hit the comm.

"Darren! Get this door open!" he yelled as he beat on it with his fist. He knew it wouldn't help, but it made him feel like he was doing something.

When Reno didn't get an immediate answer from Darren, he looked at Ian with a bleak expression on his face.

"If there is anything you can do to get this door open, I would appreciate it before the Major kills one of my crew."

Ian did not have comms with the crew so he did not know of the trouble that was happening on the other side of the door from his.

He watched his new captain as the man moved, more glided, across the floor. The glide became more of a prowl and his eyes turned cold as he pounded on the door with a shout.

"Darren! Get this door open!"

He looked over at Ian with a bleak expression on his face.

"If there is anything you can do to get this door open, I would appreciate it before the Major kills one of my crew."

His voice was soft, but Ian had used that voice so many times before.

"On it"

He moved to the right side of the door way and pulled open a panel. As he was part of Maintainence he knew a thing or two about getting from place to place.

He opened the panel and grabbed the manual crank and began to turn it. It would take a full five minutes to open the door all the way, but that was not what they nedded.

In less than a minute, he had the door open high enough to crawl under.

He would follow his captain.

Service Tunnels

Darren had taken a brief moment to gather his things before taking off after Ari through the services tunnels. She was definitely quick, he had to give her that. He had lost sight of her after a few twists and turns and wound up getting stuck at a fork in the tunnels. He wondered which way she had gone and after picking the wrong tunnel, doubled back and took the right one. The metal floors were slick and he lost his footing. As he was sent sliding and tumbling down the rest of the way towards the sounds of fighting and struggling, his ear piece fell out and disappeared down a vent.

Sergei's Corridor

Darren tumbled out of the service tunnel like a ragdoll into the corridor, smacking a wall with a loud metallic thud. A bit dazed and confused, Darren stumbled a bit as he got to his feet and got his bearings. He had somehow managed to keep ahold of his equipment as he picked up his pace while heading towards the sounds of struggling.

He passed Amber as he rounded the corner and stopped immediately once he saw what was in front of him. Sergei had a Fed in a death grip, but the big man looked drained of energy. Then he saw Ari laying still on the cold metal grating of the floor, her body not moving and her skin an unhealthy color of pale. He quickly ran over to her side, dropped his equipment, and checked her for a pulse. It was very faint and weak.

He had a flashback to his days aboard the Perseus and remembered the time the mercenary named Banner had nearly drowned while trying to cross a deep river. The man had been lucky the doctor was there with them, as she quickly went about giving the man mouth to mouth. When Banner came to, he tried to kiss the doctor in typical meathead fashion, but wound up getting slapped for his troubles.

Dropping to his knees, Darren opened Ari's mouth and brought his lips to hers. He began to blow air into her lungs for ten seconds and then checked her pulse.

"Don't you die on me, Ari..." Darren whispered, before repeating the process once more. He hoped Ari would pull through so he could go and help Sergei.

Hallway Near Docking Bay/Sergei's Corridor

Reno was nearly jumping out of his boots as he watched Ian get into the panel and start cranking the door bypass. God, it was going to take FOREVER.

Finally, he saw it was getting high enough to scoot under, so he laid down on the floor and waited until it was high enough for him to roll under. It probably a great move. For all he knew, the door could have fallen down at a moment's notice. He pushed back up to his feet as soon as he got to the other side.

His head thudded at the sight of Darren giving Ari mouth to mouth. Then it was replaced by rage. He took a gander at Sergei who had a grip on the Major, but it was waning. He stalked over there and hauled the Major up from Sergei's grasp and slammed the much larger man against the wall.

"Listen here you stupid hundan," he sneered. "You might have killed an innocent girl who has gone through WAY more in her young life than anyone ever should. Your brother was a RAPIST. We found evidence!"

The Major's eyes widened in surprise as he stopped struggling. Reno pulled out a couple pairs of the underwear they found.

"We found dozens of women's underwear hidden in his room! They were traced back to women who filed rape charges on several planets. They weren't believed of course, but the numbers of unrelated women filing charges like that? Ones on different worlds and not knowing anything about anyone else? HE WAS A RAPIST!"

The Major went completely still as Reno sneaked a look over at Darren and Ari.

"Some of those women KILLED themselves, so he was also a MURDERER due to his actions. HE WAS NOT WHO YOU THOUGHT HE WAS! GET THE BLINDERS OFF. ADMIT IT!"

Reno shoved off the man as the Major slid to the floor. Determining that the man was no longer a threat, he went to Sergei who still laid on the floor.

"How you doing, big man?" he said, softening his voice. "Do you realize you're laying on the floor?"

He held out his hand to the big guy, hoping he was able to help the guy up. He needed to do something other than watch what was going on with Ari. So much death... He had already seen enough. Watching crew possibly go right next to him? He didn't think he could do it.

Sergei's Corridor

When the Major saw her, he had snapped. She was saying such vile things; how she had killed Snake and spewing those lies about his reputation. Gone was his desire to fight the big man. He just wanted to shut her up and make her pay. He hardly registered the fact that he had cut her airway off until he was tackled by the big man and she crumpled to the ground. Sergei then kept him down by wrapping himself around him while all her wanted was to check to see if the bitch was still alive and finish the job if needed.

He was incensed even more when someone came onto the scene who went straight to the girl and began giving her aid. For God's sake, he wore a uniform! A fellow soldier and he was helping what he saw as the enemy!

"Don't you die on me, Ari..."

How did he know her name?

It then dawned on him that he was an imposter. He stilled a little to figure out what to do. His situation worsened as someone else rolled into the room from a manually open door. To his shock, the incensed man hauled him up against the wall with surprising strength and yelled at him.

"Listen here you stupid hundan,". "You might have killed an innocent girl who has gone through WAY more in her young life than anyone ever should. Your brother was a RAPIST. We found evidence!"

Evidence? What did he mean by evidence? He got it in the form of women's underwear. Now he knew that Snake was a prolific womanizer, he had even seen a couple of pairs like that in his bunk.

"We found dozens of women's underwear hidden in his room! They were traced back to women who filed rape charges on several planets. They weren't believed of course, but the numbers of unrelated women filing charges like that? Ones on different worlds and not knowing anything about anyone else? HE WAS A RAPIST!"

He went stock still as her heard the explanation. Dozens of pairs? Cross matched with reported crimes? No... It couldn't be.

"Some of those women KILLED themselves, so he was also a MURDERER due to his actions. HE WAS NOT WHO YOU THOUGHT HE WAS! GET THE BLINDERS OFF. ADMIT IT!"

Murder? The reality of the truth filled his mind as he sunk to the floor in shock. The new interloper dropped him and moved on to the big man, saying something to him. Major Harrigan stole a look at the girl who was still not coming around. What had he done? The poor girl! He had tortured her and possibly killed her! What kind of man did that make him?

"I'm sorry. He was my brother... I didn't know... He was my brother..." he began to say over and over. It wasn't enough to excuse what he or his brother had done, but it was the only thing he had to offer at that moment.

Ian had slid under the door right after his new captain. He took in the scene and went first to the Major, once he was against the wall

He broke in on the Major's mantra, half way through the next 'i didn't know' routine.

"Now you do, Major. It's time to do something about it. Dont let it have power over you, take power from it and live. The Alliance needs you. More now than before."

He paused and looked hand at the man as he leaned against the wall.

"Its time to Man Up, Major."

Ian looked over at Sergi and the woman he assumed was Ari. The man he assumed was Darren needed his help too.

"My crew needs me. Yours needs you. When we meet again, I hope its over tea as friends."

It was an ancient Chinese proverb from Earth-That-Was, but it still suited the situation ian now felt.

He turned from the Major and moved to Darren.

"I know CPR and First Aide. I can help."

He knelt down by him and assisted in the effort to bring Ari back to the land of the living.

Ari was cold. She was also sad beyond knowledge. She had seen her mother and her mother had rejected her. All she wanted to do was to stay in her mother's arms and let the world fall away. But no... Her mother had pushed her away after giving her the briefest of embraces.

"You're here too soon," "You need to go back." "Go back..."

She had received what she wanted for just a tiny little time. She wanted to feel love. Unconditional love. Something she was missing for years. Something she knew she wouldn't be feeling on the side of the living.

But perhaps her mother was telling her something. That she might have a reason to stay in this 'verse. Was it possible?

It was then that she felt her lungs expand with air like they were being forced to work. What was happening?

"Don't you die on me, Ari..."

Then there were lips on hers and another breath forced into her lungs. Those lips... That mouth... They were so soft and almost... loving. Nothing like the kisses that her conquests gave her. This man was different. That voice too... it was someone she knew and trusted.

"I know CPR and First Aide. I can help."

That voice she didn't know. Or at least she didn't recognize it right away. Maybe someone she met recently?

Then there were the soft lips again on hers as her lungs filled again, making her chest rise. Her hand twitched just a little, falling against the man's leg. She felt the unfamiliar one on the other side of her and she recoiled a bit, moving ever so slightly closer to the one who made her feel safe.

Another breath was sent through her lungs and her body began to reciprocate. She pulled in a deep breath all on her own. Once... Twice... Three times... She could still feel him close to her, his breath soft on her cheek. She opened her eyes and looked into the deep blue ones just inches from her own.

Darren. It was Darren. She couldn't understand the calm and peace she felt when she looked at him. She also couldn't remember when she ever had someone's mouth so softly placed on her own. She also knew at that point beyond a doubt that she was safe.

Then before she could stop herself, she leaned up just a scant distance between them and placed a just as soft kiss on his lips.

Sergei's strength was nearly sapped as he held onto the Major will all he had. He tried to look for Ari to see if she was OK, but all he could see was her foot and the fact that it was so still. His heart ached and that was probably what gave him the energy to last this long.

He was grateful when he saw Darren pass by him and go to her side to help, but his muscles were shaking and he knew that in a few short moments, the major would be free.

Luckily, he felt the big Alliance Officer get pulled off of him and hauled against the wall. He could hear Reno's fuzzy voice and knew from the tone that he was definitely NOT a happy camper. Despite the Major's height advantage, Reno was definitely at the point that killing the guy was a possibility.

Sergei lay there with his eyes closed, trying to breathe and get some of his strength back. Suddenly it was quiet except for the sound of someone crying. A man? Crying? He opened his eyes and craned his neck up to see that it was the major, bereft and remorseful over the brother he thought he had known and the happenings that had taken place there since the girls had arrived.

Huh.

"How you doing, big man?" "Do you realize you're laying on the floor?"

Sergei's eyes tracked to the source. Reno was standing over him, his hand extended to him to help him up. He also caught the man's body language. He was putting himself in a position where he didn't have to watch what was going on with Ari.

"She's strong," Sergei said to him sternly as he took Reno's hand and allowed him to be pulled up onto his shaky feet.

But was she? Was what had happened since Kerry been the straw that broke the camel's back? Could it be the thing that pushed her over the edge once and for all?

Then he watched the new crew member give a speech to the Major, but the words didn't mean anything as he became acutely aware of who was missing in this picture.

Amber.

Why wasn't she here? Did something happen to her?

Fear clutched his heart and shot it straight into his throat as the possibility that she had come to harm or worse dawned on him.

"Amber? Where's Amber?"

He scanned the corridor and confirmed that she was indeed not there and instead searched the wall until he found an open vent. He staggered to it, stuck his head in and called out for her.

"Amber? You in there?" he said shakily. "Please God be in here..."

Yes. Please let her be safe too.

"Amber? Darling? Please answer me!"

There was nothing he wouldn't do to feel her in his arms right then.

Sergei grabbed Reno's hand and let him assist him up. At the same time he spoke, trying to reassure him.

"She's strong,"

Reno wanted to believe that. Reno's eyes closed a little as Sergei asked about Amber. Dear God... He didn't even want to speculate on what had happened to her. Could she be dead? The thought sickened him. Then he heard Ian begin to speak to the Major and his attention was forced in that direction.

"Now you do, Major. It's time to do something about it. Dont let it have power over you, take power from it and live. The Alliance needs you. More now than before."

The Alliance needs him? The Major needed to take power from it and do something? Was Ian trying to get the Major to act? Maybe get a jump on his crew? Was he wrong in his assessment of the new recruit?

Reno's hand balled into a fist as his grip on Ian's gun tightened.

"Its time to Man Up, Major." "My crew needs me. Yours needs you. When we meet again, I hope its over tea as friends."

Over tea as friends? The way Reno would like to meet up with the man would be more along the lines of 'in a dark alley' way of things. That meeting would be less than friendly.

But then Ian turned to help Darren with Ari and he couldn't bear to look down at her, but he was certainly able to glare at Ian hard enough to burns holes in the man. He was angry, but now was not the time to act on it. Now was the time to get the girls and get gone.

He stepped closer to the man until he was close enough to be heard by Ian alone.

"Getting friendly with the enemy is not a way to gain approval from me or this crew. We would rather see this dog put down like he should be, but I'd want him be standing and ready to fight before I did," Reno sneered. "Getting him to man up and join his crew is the easiest way for me to see a way to make that desire come true. Should I be worrying about where your loyalties lie? Cause it seems that it is pretty entrenched with the enemy. Our enemy. Can I trust you?"

Ian stood and faced his new captain.

"You have my gun. Mine is holstered."

He paused, looked at the Major then back to Reno, purposely not looking at Ari and Darren as she kissed him deeply.

"We all have parts to play."

He spoke softly, his words meant only for his Captain.

"For me to do my job, and keep us free from as much Alliance oversight as possible, I have to make them think I'm still theirs. Instead of a bullet to the brain pan, I'll take a fist to the gut. Best I can come up with."

Reno flexed his hand around the butt of Ian's gun a little as the man stood to face him.

"You have my gun. Mine is holstered." "We all have parts to play."

Reno set his jaw, his anger boiling higher. Then the man spoke low. So low that he himself barely heard him.

"For me to do my job, and keep us free from as much Alliance oversight as possible, I have to make them think I'm still theirs. Instead of a bullet to the brain pan, I'll take a fist to the gut. Best I can come up with."

Reno's resolved slipped a little, relief washing the anger out. Ian was right. They needed to stay as low on the radar as possible. He was an experienced Captain and an experienced man in the ways of subterfuge. What was his problem? He knew. It was the possible loss of two of his crew. He glanced up to see Sergei searching frantically for Amber.

So now he had to save face before the Major actually did man up.

So without a word, he nailed Ian in the gut, then reached out to catch the guy if needed.

"Apologies," he whispered into Ian's ear. "I got crew possibly dead or dyin' and I am a little off my game. Won't happen again."

Then he took a chance to look down to see how Ari was doing only to see her lips on Darren's.

"Huh..."

He was bewildered. This was just surreal... A behemoth of an Alliance soldier blubbering on the floor, folks running about and Ari kissing another crew member.

"Guess she must be breakin' her rules," he said incredulously as he looked at Ian. "She doesn't do crew. Not on purpose anyway."

And didn't he know that one first hand. His scattered brain then wondered if the girl had become unhinged even more. At least she was breathing and awake.

Amber stayed where she was, holding as still as possible within the ventilation ducts. The metal was even colder there than out in the main areas of the ship, or so it seemed to her. She clenched her jaw and tried not to shiver. Sound would echo, and she didn't want to give herself away. She was concentrating so heavily on staying still and silent... and trying to hear and not hear the sounds of the fight... that she didn't notice Ari's approach. She jumped at the touch on her shoulder, barely managing to stifle a scream. Fortunately, the sound wasn't likely to be heard over the sounds of the fight. Swallowing heavily, she managed a small nod of acknowledgement.

As the fight progressed, Amber felt more and more useless. She couldn't do anything with her injury without reopening it and risking bleeding herself out. Her mind started slipping backwards, to the other time she had been stuck in a position that rendered her unable to help anyone... unable to help Ari. The sounds of the current fight were overlayed and replaced with her past memories, and their accompanying sounds and words.

I must not fear. Fear is the mindkiller she thought, her mind reflexively reciting the litany against fear her sensei had taught her years ago when she had been learning martial arts. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration it continued. So far, it wasn't helping any. It rarely did the first time through. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone I will turn the inner eye to see its path. The fighting and talking continued, past and present mixes up and confused and inseparable in Amber's panicked mind. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain. No, the fear was still there, still uncontrollable. Amber's mind replayed the litany again and again, her eyes squeezing shut and her hands pressing even more tightly against her mouth in an effort to silence her soft whimper.

She didn't notice when the fighting stopped or when the words turned to conversation rather than insults and threats. One part of her mind insisted she make a break for it while she could, take advantage of the time Sergei was buying her. Instead, she remained frozen in place, unable to move. Underlaying the words of the litany, fears began to replace memory and twist the memories into something that had never actually happened except in her nightmares. But then it began to change again. She heard Sergei's voice, but that wasn't right. He hadn't been at the Double Trouble that day. He hadn't been in the store room, either. If he had none of this would have happened. He would have put a stop to it if he had been there.

Reason began to return as panic receded. Amber realized that the fight had stopped. At least for now. She realized she had no idea what had happened, or who had actually won. For a moment, panic rose again and the thought occurred to her that the major might have somehow forced Sergei to reveal her hiding spot and call for her. But... no. She was sure he wouldn't allow himself to be used in such a way, even if it meant his own death. Something in his voice spurred her to action. She took a moment to orient herself and regain her bearings, then... just to be safe... poked her head around the corner to make sure her mind wasn't playing tricks on her. Seeing the outline of Sergei against the light, she rose to her hands and knees and crawled rapidly back to the opening of the vent. In her haste, she forgot about trying to be silent. When she got near enough, she threw herself into his arms and held tightly to him, shaking with the aftereffects of the panic and adrenaline that had been running through her... and with relief that he was okay.
